Diploma of Higher Education in Rehabilitation, 60 cr 

The Diploma provides students with multidisciplinary knowledge of health promotion and rehabilitation methods as well as  working life development in rehabilitation. The Diploma consists of four modules, 10-20 ECTS cr each. You can either sign up to study one or several courses, 1-3 modules or the whole diploma of 60 ECTS cr. Each module includes 2-4 online courses, 5 ECTS cr each. The courses are carried out in an eLearning environment. Each course contains online material, for example video lectures, independent written assignments, online exams and tests and online counselling.

The Diploma of Higher Education

  • includes study entities made up of modules from the degree program curriculum
  • can be accepted as part of a selected, international degree program (for example Degree Programmes in Health Care and Social Services), thus shortening the study time in Finland
  • are open studies without prior requirements or special work experience
  • is 60 ECTS credits, the duration of studies is from one and a half years to two years

The studies are suitable for students who  

  • need deeper understanding or new competences – regardless of their prior studies
  • want to study in a flexible way – studies are carried out online
  • are interested in developing their own work
  • are looking for a new direction in their own professional career – whether currently between jobs or at work
  • are looking for more extensive studies, but not the whole degree

Students are required to

  • be commited to these studies
  • have enough time to familiarize on materials and sources of information
  • complete all tasks and tests on time
  • to be initiative

After you have completed the diploma training (all 60 ECTS credits) you are awarded the Diploma of Higher Education.

This course is based on the curricula of Xamk's degree programmes and the Finnish credits are fully compatible with the ECTS. The level of the courses is mainly bachelor level.

Please notice that the enrollment for Module I and II has ended.
You can enroll only for Module III and IV. 

Also notice that Xamk degree students cannot enroll on Open UAS courses.

Time: 1 September 2021 – 31 May 2022
Place: Online studies

Extent: The Diploma of Higher Education is 60 credits = 4 modules, 10-20 credits each. It is also possible to choose only one, two or three modules.
Number of study places: 300 / module. Enrollment for modules III and IV is open as long as there are free study places left.

Target group: Students of different backgrounds, who are interested in these studies. Fluent English language skills as well good study skills related to online studies are required.
Credited in degree: Bachelor of Health Care and Bachelor of Social Services at Xamk University of Applied Sciences.

ECTS credits

ECTS credits represent the workload and defined learning outcomes (”what the individual knows understands and is able to do”) of a given course or programme. One credit equals 27 hours of student's work.

MODULE I MULTIDISCIPLINARY SPECIAL ISSUES IN REHABILITATION (15 CREDITS)

The goal is to provide multidisciplinary knowledge of three special issues important when working in the field of rehabilitation.

  • Physiology and management of pain in rehabilitation 5 cr.
  • Diabetes education and counseling 5 cr.
  • Respiratory and cardiovascular rehabilitation 5 cr.
     

SPRING 2021
MODULE II HEALTH PROMOTION AND CHILDREN'S WELFARE (20 CREDITS)

The goal is to provide you with knowledge of meanings and effects of health promotion and physical activity when working in rehabilitation. The goal is to provide you with knowledge of social rehabilitation to enhance children's welfare.

  • Health effects of exercise and physical activity 5 cr.
  • Foot health promotion 5 cr.
  • Nutrition for sports and physical activity 5 cr.
  • Social rehabilitation in child welfare work 5 cr.
     

Please notice that the enrollment for Module I and II has ended.
You can enroll only for Module III and IV. 
Also notice that in order to be awarded the Diploma of Higher Education in Rehabilitation, you have to complete all four modules.

AUTUMN 2021
MODULE III MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND CLIENT-ORIENTED PERSPECTIVE TO EVIDENCE-BASED REHABILITATION (15 CREDITS)

The goal is to provide you with knowledge and professional understanding of multidisciplinary assessment of human functioning and using client-oriented and evidence-based methods in rehabilitation with adults.

  • Rehabilitation policy and rehabilitation approaches (Master level) 5 cr.

  • Social rehabilitation work with adults 5 cr.

  • Multidisciplinary assessment of functional abilities (Master level) 5 cr.

SPRING 2022
MODULE IV RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN REHABILITATION (10 CREDITS)

The goal is to identify the research or development needs in your professional field and based on that to plan, implement, assess and report a development process in the working world of rehabilitation.

  • Research-, development- and innovation methods 5 cr.
  • Development work 5 cr.

We strongly recommend Module IV only for students, who have attended Modulle III.

Physiology and management of pain in rehabilitation

The course content consists of three topics related to the:
1. Classification and measurement of pain, 1cr
2. Physiological mechanisms of pain, 2 cr
3. Effects of pain on individual physical and mental functioning in rehabilitation, 2 cr

Diabetes education and counseling 

The course content consists of three topics related to the:
1. Evidence based diabetes education and counseling 2 cr
2. Development of professional's own counseling skills 2 cr
3. Research methods in diabetes education and counseling 1 cr

Respiratory and cardiovascular rehabilitation

1. How do you choose, justify, and use assessment methods for performance and load levels to support customer’s targets?
2. How do you support client’s ability to evaluate her/his own progress at various stages of rehabilitation?
3. How do you develop and implement the progressive and right-tier training program for respiratory and cardiovascular clients at various stages of rehabilitation by aligning it with the client's psychosocial resources?
4. How do you guide and support your customers and their close ones to make use of the potential of living and social participation?
5. How do you co-operate multi-professionally with specific issues related to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases?

Health effects of exercise and physical activity

The course content consists of three topics related to the:

1. Effects of physical activity on metabolism, cardiovascular function, nervous system and endocrine glands, 2 cr
2. Health effects of exercise in different age groups, 2 cr
3. Effects of different training methods on physical fitness and performance, 2 cr

Foot health promotion

The course content consists of four topics related to the:

1. Anatomy and Physiology of the Foot, 1 cr
2. Healthy Feet, Daily Foot Care and Proper Shoes, 1 cr
3. Diabetic Foot, Rheumatoid Foot, Foot Skin Diseases, 2 cr
4. Risk Foot Examination, Treatment, and Off-Loading, 1 cr

Nutrition for sports and physical activity

The course content consists of three topics related to the: 

1. Basic knowledge of nutrition, 1 cr
2. Energy demand and consumption during exercise, energy metabolism, 2 cr
3. Nutrition, fluid balance and recovery to support endurance and strength training, 2 cr

Social rehabilitation in child welfare work

1. How do you catch one's interest on the supporting and the good factors in problematic situations?
2. How do you identify the safeguard and risk factors for child?
3. What are the impressive methods of child welfare work?
4. How do you apply promoting methods in child welfare work?

Multidisciplinary assessment of functional abilities (Master level)

1. How is functional ability defined and what are the influencing factors according to the ICF framework in the evaluation and promotion of rehabilitation activities?
2. What assessment methods are reliable and valid in the multidisciplinary rehabilitation process and how are they connected to the different stages of the process?
3. How is the client’s participation in the rehabilitation process enhanced by means of the GAS method?
4. How do you utilize multidisciplinary knowledge and interaction in the assessment process?

Rehabilitation policy and rehabilitation approaches (Master level)

1. What are the main concepts and approaches in rehabilitation?
2. What is the content of political and administrative planning, control and decision-making and how is it applied to the management and development of social and health care and rehabilitation?
3. What is the legal and ethical basis of the rehabilitation service system and how is it used to control the planning and development of operation?
4. Where is multidisciplinary research into rehabilitation found and how can it be applied?

Social rehabilitation work with adults

The course consists of four main topics:

1. The challenges of the integrity of customer’s life situation
2. The rehabilitation opportunities in cases of substance abuse, mental health disorders and criminal behavior
3. The preparation of social rehabilitation plan and utilizing it in social rehabilitation work with adults
4. The promoting of social rehabilitation at individual and structural level

Research-, development- and innovation methods

The course content consists of five topics related to the:

1. Describing process of research-oriented development and the approaches relevant in rehabilitation 2. Seeking information systematically and evaluate its’ reliability
3. Making a literature review 
4. Basics of qualitative and quantitative research methods
5. Ethical principles and reliability in research-oriented development

Development work

The course content consists of three topics related to the: 

1. Creating an evidence-based theoretical framework and research questions for your development work
2. Selecting, justifying and applying research-based methods to answer your research questions
3. Reporting the results and the eventual outcome of your development work

After completing 60 ECTS credits the students are awarded the Diploma of Higher Education. The diploma will be delivered 
 – in paper form for those who have their home address in Finland
 – by email in PDF form for those who have their home address in some other country.
