The master’s degree programme in rehabilitation aims to strengthen your professional competence in client-oriented and evidence-based rehabilitation.

The master’s degree programme offers you a possibility to develop your professional competence and share your work experiences in an international and multidisciplinary student network.

Master’s degree studies strengthen your competencies in producing client-oriented, evidence-based and effective rehabilitation services.

You improve your ability to participate in demanding research-oriented development processes and work in management and expert positions in the field of multidisciplinary rehabilitation. 

Having completed these master’s degree studies, you are able to apply multidisciplinary and evidence-based knowledge and development methods, which strengthens your professional competence in rehabilitation practices and related research-oriented development activities.

You will gain a deeper understanding of the health effects of interventions and technologies that aim to promote individual physical activity. You also receive the competence required in the management and reorganisation of rehabilitation practices.

In addition, the studies enhance your abilities to evaluate and improve the quality and effectiveness of client-oriented rehabilitation services.

You also develop your skills to communicate and work in multidisciplinary national and international teams and networks in the field of rehabilitation

Study contents

The scope of rehabilitation studies is 90 ECTS credits divided into three parts: core competence (35 ECTS credits), complementary competence (25 ECTS credits) and master’s thesis (30 ECTS credits).  

CORE COMPETENCE 35 ECTS credits 

Future-oriented competence in rehabilitation services 20 ECTS credits 

  • Rehabilitation policy and rehabilitation approaches 5 ECTS
  • Multidisciplinary assessment of functional abilities 5 ECTS
  • Management of the promotion of physical activities 5 ECTS
  • Wellbeing technologies in rehabilitation 5 ECTS.

Research, development and innovation skills 15 ECTS credits 

  • Client-oriented evaluation and development of rehabilitation services 5 ECTS.
  • Effectiveness of rehabilitation services 5 ECTS
  • Basics and methods of research-oriented development 5 ECTS

COMPLEMENTARY COMPETENCE 25 ECTS credits

Based on your interests, you can choose complementary competence studies from a wide range of Xamk Master School common studies. Among these studies, at least one course in leadership skills must be chosen to meet the objectives set for the master’s degree studies.

The common studies comprise courses in the following fields: 

  • Research and development 
  • Management, leadership and entrepreneurship 
  • International working environments 
  • Information, digital services and networks. 

You can also choose complementary competence studies from other universities if they are offered as master’s degree level studies.  More information is provided by the Degree Programme Coordinator. 

If you have previously completed studies at the level of EQF 7 that match the objectives of the degree programme, these studies can be included in your rehabilitation degree programme studies. More information is provided by the Degree Programme Coordinator.  

MASTER’S THESIS

The master’s thesis (30 ECTS credits) is an important part of your studies. Its topic should be aimed at developing your own work or the performance of your work community.

Master’s theses completed in the degree programme of rehabilitation must relate to the development of client-oriented, multidisciplinary and evidence-based practices in the context of rehabilitation.

In your thesis, you identify development needs in your professional field, and plan and implement a related research or development process.  You can also complete your thesis as part of Xamk’s RDI projects or by commission from a partner organisation or company.

Study while you work

In total, the duration of studies ranges from two to three years (90 ECTS credits).

The degree programme studies are fully implemented through an online learning platform and online courses, including webinars, group meetings, project work, independent tasks and peer discussions.

Students must have a computer equipped with a webcam and software necessary in the studies and a microphone (headset).

Online lessons take place on predetermined days. The number of online lesson days is 2–3 per month for the first year and 1–2 for the second year.

Orientation and online lessons (TEAMS) schedule for autumn 2023 (spring schedule will be informed later):

  • 7.-8.9.
  • 2.-3.10.
  • 15.-16.11.
  • 29.-30.11.
  • 8.12.

You are advised to integrate report writing and other assignments into your own field of work with a focus on the development of rehabilitation practices.

The language of instruction is English. Tuition, assignments, exams and the master’s thesis writing process are instructed, conducted and completed in English.
