The Diploma of Higher Education in Tourism and Business Management in Finland

This diploma provides knowledge and competence in tourism and business management.  You enhance your expertise in customer-oriented service development and digital marketing in European business environment. The modules are carried out as online courses. 

The whole 60 ECTS credits takes half a year (three semesters) to complete. It is also possible to choose only one module, 20 ECTS credits.

Each module consists of four courses, 5 ECTS credits each.

The courses are free of charge.

The courses are carried out in an eLearning environment. Each course contains online material, for example video lectures, independent written assignments, online exams and tests and online counselling.

MODULE I: MANAGING INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS OPERATIONS, 20 ECTS cr

The goal of Module I is to provide students with key concepts and professional understanding of tourism as business, planning marketing, anticipating risks and understanding diversity.

Destination Finland, 5 cr

What are the key concepts of domestic and international tourism in English? Which elements of Finnish nature and culture could be used as basis of experience tourism product for international market? What are the pull factors, major tourist areas, destinations, ways of travelling and special features of tourism in Finland? What is the structure of tourism business and what are the traveler streams arriving in and leaving Finland? How do you work in an international team?

Customer-oriented marketing, 5 cr

What are the objectives and role of customer-oriented marketing and relationship marketing in the operation of the organization? How does the digital economy and operational environment affect the planning of marketing? How is customer buying behavior and segmentation taken into consideration when defining the objectives and target groups? What does marketing- mix consist of and how can it be used to reach organizational goals?

Tourism risk management, 5 cr

Where do you find information, models and guides about tourism risks and safety issues? What kind of risks and safety issues are involved in tourism? What are the duties and responsibilities of entrepreneurs and staff in tourism field? How do you perform a risk assessment? What kind of safety documents are required in hospitality business? How do you work responsibly and in compliance with safety norms?

Intercultural competence, 5 cr

What is culture? What are values, beliefs, (negative) cultural perception? How to recognize cultural differences based on comparing elements of one’s own national culture to Finnish culture? How to communicate effectively in intercultural settings? What are the main features of Finnish society in terms of politics and economics including social and cultural factors?

MODULE II: EFFECTIVE HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT PLANNING, 20 ECTS cr

The goal of Module II is to provide students with added professional capabilities to understand hospitality and tourism business demand and supply, plan and manage social media marketing campaigns, anticipate the effects of seasonality in tourism business and manage personnel in effective and professional way.

Hospitality management, 5 cr

What is the scale of tourist movements in the 21st century? How to activate team skills by understanding the different tasks, activities and functions of your team when managing a hospitality organization? Why is there a need for sustainable tourism development? What are the topical issues, revealing the fast-changing nature of the tourism and hospitality business in terms of both demand and supply? How to be aware and understand the complexity and interconnection of the modern tourism and hospitality industry?

Social media marketing, 5 cr

How to create a social media presence for an organization using diverse platforms? How to utilize social media tools and services for insight about how consumers feel about brands and respond to social media marketing? How to develop and manage successful social media marketing efforts?

Seasonality and tourism planning, 5cr

What kind of issues and models are there in tourism planning and development? How to cope with different kinds of private and public sector processes in regional tourism planning and development? How to utilize seasonality, nature and culture as pulling factors in the product development in a sustainable way? How are the company level and regional level targets related to each other?

Human research management, 5 cr

What are the most important HRM operations in multicultural organizations? How to recall HRM development strategies? What is included in effective HRM processes? How to plan recruitment, orientation, and training of employees in multicultural organizations?

MODULE III: PRODUCING HIGH QUALITY SERVICES, 20 ECTS cr

The goal of Module III is to provide students with knowledge of food safety and related legislation, in professional kitchens in European Union, and, tools to maintain the level required with self-monitoring plan. Module III gives the student knowledge of recognizing global business opportunities and analyzing market areas. It provides understanding of influences of economic policies on the function of the different sectors of society.

The module adds to knowledge of selecting international business operations, suited for different international business environments. Module III also gives tools for designing, producing and evaluating opportunities for well-being tourism.

Food safety, 5 cr

Which food product regulations affect food safety and work in professional kitchens? Which are the risks related to handling, preparing, serving and selling food? How are the risks managed? How are food products handled and stored in a safe way? What are the responsibilities of food professionals according to the European Union legislation? What does a self-monitoring plan include and how is it implemented?

International business, 5 cr

What are the most important features in the international business environment? What are the company’s opportunities and prerequisites related to international operations? What are the strategies of international operations? How to select the most appropriate operation model?

Well-being tourism, 5 cr

What is the key terminology in well-being tourism? What is Finland’s well-being tourism strategy, mission and vision? What is the significance of art and culture in well-being tourism? What is the role of food in well-being tourism? How do you utilize technology? How do you design, produce and evaluate products and services in this sector?

Economics, 5 cr

What does an economy consist of? What is the theory of enterprise from the economics viewpoint? How do economic policies affect the various sectors of society?

About the Diploma of Higher Education

The Diploma of Higher Education includes

  • study entities made up of modules from the degree program curriculum
  • can be accepted as part of a selected, international degree program (for example International Digital Business Program), thus shortening the study time in Finland
  • are open studies without prior requirements or special work experience.
  • 60 ECTS credits, the duration of studies is from one and a half years to two years.

After completing these studies the students are awarded the Diploma of Higher Education.

The studies are suitable for students who

  • need deeper understanding or new competences
    – regardless of their prior studies.
  • want to study in a flexible way – studies are carried out online.
  • are interested in developing their own work
  • are looking for a new direction in their own professional career – whether currently between jobs or at work.
  • are looking for more extensive studies, but not the whole degree.
