Mikkeli Campus is located at a former military base with beautiful buildings and surroundings. It has a truly international atmosphere as there are over 300 foreign students from many different countries on campus every year. There are 3500 students and 300 staff members at the campus all together.

On Mikkeli campus there are three bachelor’s degree programmes which are taught completely in English: Environmental Engineering, Information Technology and Wellbeing Management.

In addition, there are foreign exchange students who come to study in Mikkeli every year.

Environmental Engineering

Implementation of studies

The Environmental Engineering programme at Xamk offers a new way to complete the Bachelor of Engineering degree. The first, third and fourth study year in this programme are delivered fully online.

The second year of studies (appr. August 2021 – May 2022) has a very strong practical orientation and is delivered as full-time studies on Xamk Mikkeli Campus. This study period is a mandatory part of the degree and requires your presence in Mikkeli, Finland.

FIRST WEEK SCHEDULE

Orientation week starts on Monday 24 August 2020. There will be online guidance to general study rules and practices, programmes used in handling your studies and so on. You can also discuss about your personal study plan with the Studies Coordinator already during the orientation week, if you have previous studies that can be recognized as a part of the degree at Xamk,

You will receive information for the online orientation week from your Studies Coordinator Hannu Poutiainen on 11 August. Please reserve about 2 h time daily for the orientation during 24-28 August.

GROUP TIMETABLE

Courses for autumn semester 2020 begin on 31 August. The study group timetable is organised by individual teachers of the courses. You will receive information through Learn system once you have access to Student intranet. Guidance to this is given during the orientation week.

Health examination for non-Finnish students

Students from outside Finland are required to have a health examination done by a medical professional, doctor, in their home country before arrival in Finland. Please have the professional (doctor) fill in a certificate of health examination and bring the certificate with you in the beginning of studies.

The purpose of the certificate to give Xamk school nurses basic information about your health that they need for providing you health care services during your studies.

Studies beginning in autumn semester 2020 are based on personal study plan. Studies begin on Mikkeli Campus (address Patteristonkatu 3) as follows:

  • 17.-21.08.2020 – Arrival in Mikkeli and preparing study plan with Studies Coordinator
  • 24.-28.08.2020 – Orientation for studies
  • 31.08.2020 – Studies begin in-class

Instructions on travelling

Entry regulations and self-isolation upon arrival

It is good to note, that many countries continue to restrict inbound passenger travel, and that exceptional visa regulations, for example, may be in force. Check updated entry regulations from the authorities of the country of your travel destination.

Persons arriving in Finland from abroad must restrict non-essential close contacts and self-isolate for 14 days. Please find here the Instructions for passengers arriving in Finland by Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (PDF).

Travel arrangements and insurance

We highly recommend you to make the travel arrangements as late as possible to avoid any situations which might cause extra costs to you. You are always recommended to take out a comprehensive travel insurance. It is particularly important now that you make sure your insurance policy provides sufficient coverage.

Mikkeli

Student accommodation in Mikkeli

Degree students arrange housing themselves prior to their arrival in Finland, Xamk cannot offer accomodation to students.

  • Student housing in Mikkeli:
    Mikkeli Student Housing Ltd (MOAS): www.moas.fi
    Most of the student residences have the basic furniture including bed, desk, chair, and table and benches in the kitchen. Make use of all the second hand shops available for other things you will need: mattress, pillow, blanket, dishes etc!

Getting to Mikkeli

  • If you are travelling via Helsinki Airport, you most likely will prefer to use a train connection.
  • If you are coming from Helsinki city center or other cities in Finland, please, check Matkahuolto or Onnibus web-pages for the options.
  • If you are arriving from St. Petersburg, you can consider taking the Allegro train to the Kouvola train station with a connection to Mikkeli travel centre.
  • Try to arrange your flight or other arrival in Helsinki early enough so you can reach Mikkeli not too late in the evening.
  • You should arrive in Mikkeli at least 2-4 days before the studies begin.
