LEARNING UNLIMITED

Xamk is a new type of institution of higher education. Its guideline is the idea of unlimited learning and research: the interest in learning new is a way of looking at the world, and not restricted by time, place or the method of learning.

Studies with practical orientation

Studies at a university of applied sciences (UAS) focus on professional and practical know-how and skills. The practical experience provided by UAS studies is highly appreciated in many jobs and duties. UAS Bachelor’s level studies also provide the opportunity to apply for further studies, such as completing a UAS master’s level degree and continuing as far as a doctoral degree.

UAS bachelor’s degrees always include supervised practical training that give the students the opportunity to apply the knowledge learnt in theory into practice. Students become familiar with the duties of their own field in real working environments.

Practical training can be carried out in a Finnish or foreign company, public organisation or in other organisations, such as associations and societies. Also working as an entrepreneur is possible as long as the other terms of the practical training are met.

Research, development and innovation, ie RDI activities, are a part of the key obligations of universities of applied sciences. They carry out new research, produce new methods and develop products and services based on the needs of their own operating area.

Participation in RDI brings new dimensions to studies. Students can gain experience in real research projects, challenge themselves to work like professionals and learn to identify what development requires.

Projects with working life orientation give a chance for networking. Students can already contact their possible future employers.

UAS BACHELOR’S DEGREES

Bachelor’s degree studies include basic studies, professional studies, practical training and a bachelor’s thesis. Completing these studies makes students qualified for posts requiring a degree of higher education. The degree can be completed through full-time or blended studies.

Full-time studies are carried out from Monday to Friday. Students are from all age groups, with no upper age limit.

Blended studies can – depending on the degree programme – involve contact classes during week days, evenings or weekends as well as online studies and independent distance learning. Blended studies can be completed alongside working, but having a job is not a requirement.

UAS MASTER’S DEGREES

Master’s degree studies are available for persons with bachelor’s degrees or other applicable degrees of higher education and with the minimum of three years’ work experience in the field after graduation.

Master’s degrees allow students to further develop their professional competence after working life experience. Students learn to obtain and process the research information of their professional field and to apply it in their work. Completing a master’s degree makes students qualified for development and expert duties at work. UAS master’s degrees give the same qualifications for public offices as the master’s degrees completed at universities.

DEGREE PROGRAMMES IN ENGLISH

UAS degree programmes in English are available for application through the joint application to higher education in January. As there are foreigners among the students, different cultures become familiar. Students can also increase the international element of their studies by completing the practical training or an exchange period abroad.

Applicants of the degree programmes in English should have good skills in the English language. Perfect skills in English are not required, but they should be sufficient for completing the studies.

Three different tracks for completing the studies

South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences offers a plenty of possibilities and alternatives for planning studies. Studies can follow different tracks depending on students’ situations in life and take place through learning environments that are independent of time and place, such as the browser-based Moodle online learning environment used at Xamk. There are three different tracks for the studies: scheduled track, independent track and blended track

SCHEDULED TRACK

Students following this track attend instruction and counselling according to the timetable. Studies follow the timetable of contact classes and assignments are completed independently.

INDEPENDENT TRACK

This track is for students who want to complete their studies quicker by choosing independent methods of study, eg. online courses, or courses from the timetables of student groups of the same degree programme. Completing assignments through this track involves more independent work and learning compared to the scheduled track. Following the independent track is also possible at the same time with the scheduled track courses. This makes it possible for students to attend contact classes according to their interests and needs. The learning assignments, however, are completed based on the instructions given for the independent track.

Prior learning matching the learning outcomes of the course or corresponding work experience can be recognised either fully or partially. Without a certificate of formal education, this may require further demonstration of the competence. In cases of partial recognition students must independently complete the parts of the course that cannot be recognised.

BLENDED TRACK

Students that work for companies or organisations of their future professional field, or in projects, can complete courses or modules fully or partly through working. In such cases students must contact the teacher of the course before it starts to agree on the development assignments to be done for the company or project. Learning this way requires that the assignments at work match the themes and topics of the corresponding course, and that students master them both in theory and in practice. The learning outcomes of the course define how the competence gained at work is demonstrated.

Online studies

Online studies are a tool for versatile studies and flexibility in terms of time and place. Online learning environments enable flexible interaction between students and teachers and work as tools to support traditional classroom teaching on many Xamk courses.

The online learning environment used at Xamk is browser-based Moodle. Moodle enables compiling, managing and carrying out courses in a user-friendly way regardless of the method of implementation as contact classes or either partially or fully online. Also each student group often has its own Moodle platform for communication and distributing information.

Studies at Xamk provides students with a free-of-charge opportunity to complete courses of other universities of applied sciences during the summer. These studies with the basic course information are available through the national CampusOnline.fi portal. Enrolment, however, takes place through the website of each UAS.

International studies

Xamk offers several ways of incorporating international elements to the studies. A degree or its part can be completed in English, and there are foreign students attending Xamk’s summer term and the studies of degree programmes with instruction in English. Exchange periods or practical training can be carried out in foreign partner schools or organisations either through the Erasmus and Nordplus programmes or bilateral student exchange agreements.

In addition to interesting courses, studies abroad also offer new experiences, friends and promote language skills and self-confidence.

Xamk’s international activities aim at improving students’ skills in working in international and multicultural working environments.

Further opportunities for studies

OPEN UAS

Open UAS studies are available for everyone regardless of age and previous education. There is an electronic enrolment form for the studies that include courses and/or modules ─ or their parts ─ belonging to Xamk’s degree studies in different fields. At the moment, UAS studies are free of charge for the students of upper secondary education.

CONTINUING EDUCATION AND EXPERT SERVICES

Working life requires continuous maintenance and development of know-how and skills. This guarantees organisations’ competitive edge and maintains and improves their personnel’s competence, wellbeing and ability to work.

SPECIALIST EDUCATION

Specialist education is a new type of education alongside degree studies and continuing education. This type of studies take place after graduation from higher education are aimed at persons with work experience to promote their professional development.
