Active Life Lab
Active Life Lab is a research and development unit of the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, which works in the premises of Saimaa Stadium, established in 2018 in Mikkeli.
The facilities of Active Life Lab offer possibilities to measure the effectiveness of activities targeted to improve human wellbeing. The information provided by the variety of indicators can be used to find out how the effectiveness of the activities varies in different customer groups.
Active Life Lab works as a basis for two new Xamk health study programs Development of data based well-being services (Master) – and Wellbeing Management (BBA) – for future professionals. In their studies, students engage closely with the activities of the laboratory, bringing new perspectives and diverse knowhow of the healthcare industry.
In addition to training programs at Saimaa Stadium, Active Life Lab collaborates extensively with other training programs at Xamk. The diversity in the different areas of expertise of the students is also easily available to our partners.
BioSampo - Training and applied research in the field of energy, bio and circular economy
BioSampo’s activities have been developed from a learning environment into that of applied research.
BioSampo research unit strengthens the development of polytechnic education and RDI activities in the fields of energy, forest, environment and energy.
BioSampo’s operations are more and more focused on the circular economy and e.g. finegrained wood materials and processes needed in their utilization. Slow pyrolysis plays a major role in BioSampo.
Smart grids and “Iot” remote access systems are the new operating environments. Decentralised energy production and the development of the CHP energy units and laboratory operations, as well as the use of electricity control and storage methods will enable the digital learning environment, as well as the enlargement of the RDI activities in BioSampo.
In the fraction technology research centre, ashes from industry and power plants are treated. One of the next objectives is to micronize ash and charcoal.
Laboratory exercises are provided for the students of the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences. In addition, there is active collaboration with the students of the local vocational college.
Fiberlaboratory - developing future bioproduct processes
The FiberLaboratory is an innovative, networked operating environment for developing future bioproduct processes, implementing new ideas, solving process technology problems and testing industrial maintenance.
The FiberLaboratory develops technology and innovations for the processing and forestry industry, as well as for chemical, measurement, control and automation system manufacturers. The laboratory conducts research and development of an international standard and educates bioproduct technology engineers.
The FiberLaboratory offers an extensive range of services that are tailored to customer requirements. These include expert services, as well as test-run and laboratory services.
The main issues in cooperation with companies are:
- Technology development of big scale industrial forest based bio refinery processes
- Research activities focusing on rapid mixing phenomena boosting the efficiency of industrial processes
- Practical equipment testing
- Development work of production and applications of Micro Crystallized Cellulose.
The projects support the competitiveness of companies by developing technology that for example reduces energy, water and carbon dioxide emissions.
The FiberLaboratory has fiber, water and wastewater laboratories, piloting equipment up to industrial scale and portable piloting equipment for factory tests. The total floor area of the FiberLaboratory is now approximately 1600 m2. From that area fiber, water and wastewater laboratories takes approximately 160 m2 and the piloting facilities have a total floor area of approximately 680 m2.

FUEL is a product and service development clinic that utilizes service design methods and design thinking.
Future Experience Lab FUEL is an open learning environment and an intelligent co-development space, which connects the region’s companies and actors to joint development and interaction, to the innovation ecosystem.
At FUEL customer experience, future knowledge, digitality and data are at the center of what we do. New digital technologies support multidisciplinary co-operation and decision-making. At the same time, they provide a fertile platform for innovation.

Industrial wood construction and technical testing laboratory enables pilot and industrial scale testing.
By utilizing our world-class expertise and tooling, life-size structures can be developed and tested.
Technical performance can be determined for the entity instead of the components, thus making it possible to optimize the use of materials and improve the efficiency of construction.
The accelerated weathering test performed on the experimental structure tests and develops the structure’s physical properties.

Juvenia - Youth research and development centre
Our goal in Juvenia – Youth Research and Development Centre is to support equal and participatory youth by combining effective research and development work.
Our activities focus on strengthening young people’s inclusion, citizenship and communality, and preventing marginalization. In the youth sector, we promote, among other things, environmental awareness, digitalization and internationalization.
We employ more than 30 researchers and developer experts who implement local, national and international research and development projects that focus on multidisciplinary youth research, as well as the development and evaluation of youth services and methods in the youth field. In addition, we offer training and expert services. During its years of operation, Juvenia has implemented more than 80 research, development and training projects related to young people.
Our core competence is youth-oriented research and development. As a learning environment for co-development, Juvenia brings together young people, stakeholders and Xamk’s own students as well as international trainees and researchers.
Oil spill response simulator training
Oil spill simulator training improves the technical and the tactical spill response competencies. Training is conducted using full-scale navigational bridge simulators and an oil recovery simulator.

Integration of the oil recovery simulation into maritime simulators creates a unique learning environment, in which the elements of the oil spill response operation can be trained comprehensively.
Courses are built to focus on the maritime related skills, namely vessel manoeuvring and navigational skills as well as the skills related to the marine oil spill response operation. Main training topics include the on-water oil spill response and recovery tactics and techniques, as well as conducting the response measures in challenging operating environments.
uXlab - usability laboratory
The eye movement camera looks at the pupils of the test person and reacts to the movement and objects of the eye. This allows us to measure what subjects are interested in and how intuitively they find the information they want while performing predefined tasks.
Testing can be done on a computer and mobile device.
The equipment is movable, so usability testing can also be carried out in the customer’s own premises anywhere in Finland.

In addition, there is a biometric sensor that senses the emotional state of the test subject. This can be particularly useful in testing the user experience of audiovisual content. The data is analysed by Xamk experts and a high-quality report with conclusions and proposals for development measures is formed.
Xamk RestoLab is a completely new type of service business, learning and development environment for food services and tourism in Finland.
Xamk RestoLab brings learning environment solutions that utilize virtual and game-based and VR technologies to food and tourism services and thus enables flexible remote learning of the skills needed in the field anywhere, almost at any time.
A hybrid teaching model is used for learning skills.
Xamk Restolab’s learning environment solutions and the hybrid teaching model enable entrepreneurs to actively participate in skills-developing teaching regardless of location.

Digitalia - Research Center on Digital Information Management
In the digital world, sets of information can literally disappear with one click. Digitalia helps to save the valuable cultural heritage.
Digitalia is a joint research and development network formed by South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk), University of Helsinki, and The National Library of Finland.
Our solutions improve the opportunities to use digitized and born-digital material for e.g. academic research. We develop automated content analysis, optical character recognition, anonymisation and information visualisation in 3D environment. Our methods cover both AI and rule-based ones. We process various types of documents: digitized text, photos, videos and historical newspaper resources, as well as e-mails and social media data.
Our work helps to make sure information is preserved for a long time, while being usable and reliable. We conduct migration research, i.e. advance in transferring digital information from obsolete media and repositories into novel ones. We improve the quality and usability of historical resources.
Electronics 3K Factory - testing, product development and manufacturing
Electronics 3K factory services cover electronics testing, production, development and training services.
Electronics 3K factory provide electronics failure analysis and environmental testing services as well as X-ray inspection for electronics. The 3K services and up-dated operational environment allow companies extensive R&D and production facilities.
Our services contain QFN replacement and BGA repair/rework. We have invested in future technologies and we keep our machinery up to date.
IEC standard tests are taken into account when laboratory equipment investment are performed. In addition, project specific tests as well as tests in accordance with the requirements of the standard MIL-STD 810G can be carried out.
Product development laboratories at 3K Factory have been established for challenging harsh environment testing.

Kymilabs - concrete testing and measurement services
KymiLabs has more than 30 years of extensive experience in concrete testing services and emission measurements. Our expert measurement and testing services support strong regional and business-oriented research and development work, which in turn enables us to renew our operations.
Kymilabs is a testing laboratory T197 / SFS-EN ISO/IEC 17025 accredited by the FINAS accreditation service and a notified body NB2450. Our accredited qualification area can be seen on the FINAS website.
We have versatile solutions for various needs:

Materials technology laboratory
Materials technology laboratory spelialise in mechanical testing of materials and structures in laboratory conditions as well as in customer locations.
Our load frames are suitable for static and dynamic tests, even at elevated temperatures. We can prepare the samples to be tested of the customer’s materials with CNC-methods.
We can characterize, in addition to the mechanical properties of materials, their structure, chemical and elemental composition. The thermal analysis allows us to determine the number of material properties over a wide temperature range. We also analyze the surface properties of materials with a comprehensive range of equipment.
Exposure of materials to light, heat, humidity and/or corrosion is tested with standard methods by condition, xenon, and salt fog exposure equipment. The impact of condition testing can be assessed with several analysing methods.
In our special competence of industrial glued joints, we provide consulting services by the personnel qualified in bonding technology (DVS ®/EWF European Adhesive Engineer). The services include, among others, advice on the choice of glue, the pre-treatment methods of the glued surfaces and design of the glued joints. We also offer the testing of glued joints (static and fatigue tests) as well as, where appropriate, specimen preparation for bonding in our laboratory.
Testing and analysis are carried out in accordance with the standards in force, adapting them or according to the needs of the client.

NELI - North European Logistics Institute
NELI – North European Logistics Institute is a research unit of logistics and seafaring in South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences. We are an active education innovator in seafaring and logistics – the link between business and education.
NELI is also part of the regional and international logistics, research, development and innovation network.
The cooperation of regional organizations, the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, the provincial cities and the regional council, is seamless. The County program, as well as regional strategies steer NELI activities.
Oil spill response test basin
Oil spill response test basin is designed for training and testing purposes. The facility is comprised of a major test basin and smaller test tanks that enable the use of variety of test oils in a controlled environment.
Oil spill response testing and training facility provides a unique outdoor environment to improve spill response capability. Training or testing the spill response techniques with real oil has not previously been possible in this scale in Finland. The basin enables using full-scale on-water containment and recovery equipment with various types of oils.
Oil spill response test basin can be used to assess the performance of oil spill response equipment and techniques as well as to conduct tests on response products.
Oil spill response test basin provides various possibilities to carry out practical training such as oil containment and recovery exercises.
We provide the most commonly used spill response equipment, but training can also be conducted using customer’s own equipment.
Facility is operated by the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) and it is located in Kotka, approximately 1,5 hours east from Helsinki.
Wood technology laboratory
The laboratory of wood technology servess businesses, public bodies and private individuals in the development of wood processing, production and manufacture industry.
We manufacture small and medium sized molds and lasts as well as prototypes for wood industry, furniture industry, metal industry and reinforced plastic industry with years of experience. Our services include material and product testing, analysis, as well as simulation and
applied research. In addition, we offer prototype and trial production series of advanced products.
We use three and five-axis CNC machining centres and carpenter machinery for molds and lasts. In materials research and testing, we use materials and environmental technology laboratories. Our services include NC processing, CAD/CAM programming, modelling and processing services, scanning and digitizing of products, manufacture of moulds and lasts, as well as material and manufacturing know-how.
We offer wood impregnation, drying and heat modification. Our services include process optimization, chemical testing and test sample treatments according to customer’s wishes. We are also implementing various special treatments and drying with a comprehensive laboratory equipment.
We have, in our disposal, four impregnation systems, as well as a HDT-drying plant, which allows the implementation of a number of different processes. In addition, we carry out, if necessary, the testing of the modified material. There is also a paint shop in our wood laboratory. See detailed list of services on our webpages.
