RESEARCH UNIT MIKPOLIS IS YOUR PARTNER IN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Mikpolis is the research, development and innovation unit of South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences. Located in Mikkeli, it supports clients’ RDI activities and knowhow in material and manufacturing engineering industries.

We collaborate flexibly with business in shared-cost research projects as well as in single commissions. We use the resources of the material and wood technology laboratories, as well as related resources of our other areas of competence.

The materials technology laboratory offers a wide range of testing and analysis services for your business to specify and develop products, materials, structures and characteristics. We carry out external production quality control and we help to solve the problems and challenges of production processes. Our testing methods are customizable to the needs of our clients.

The laboratory of wood technology performs experimental impregnation of wood, thermal modification and drying of wood, designs and manufactures mold solutions for wood, furniture and reinforced plastics industry and offers a wide range of testing and analysis services.

Our laboratory and manufacturing environments are modern, superbly equipped and operated by skilled personnel.

Our operations have been developed successfully since the year 2005.

BUSINESS SERVICES OF MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY

We specialize in mechanical testing of materials and structures in laboratory conditions as well as in customer locations.

Our load frames are suitable for static and dynamic tests, even at elevated temperatures. We can prepare the samples to be tested of the customer’s materials with CNC-methods.

We can characterize, in addition to the mechanical properties of materials, their structure, chemical and elemental composition. The thermal analysis allows us to determine the number of material properties over a wide temperature range. We also analyze the surface properties of materials with a comprehensive range of equipment.

Exposure of materials to light, heat, humidity and/or corrosion is tested with standard methods by condition, xenon, and salt fog exposure equipment. The impact of condition testing can be assessed with several analysing methods.

In our special competence of industrial glued joints, we provide consulting services by the personnel qualified in bonding technology (DVS ®/EWF European Adhesive Engineer). The services include, among others, advice on the choice of glue, the pre-treatment methods of the glued surfaces and design of the glued joints. We also offer the testing of glued joints (static and fatigue tests) as well as, where appropriate, specimen preparation for bonding in our laboratory.

Testing and analysis are carried out in accordance with the standards in force, adapting them or according to the needs of the client.

XAMK RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

As a research and development organization, Xamk aims at, in particular, to develop the regions of Kouvola, Kotka, Mikkeli and Savonlinna. The goal is to improve the competitiveness and knowhow of businesses as well as the new national and international kick offs.

The University of Applied Sciences produces new research and methods and develops products and services to the needs of regions. Research is usually done in shared-cost research projects.

Shared-cost research means that the university and companies are involved in the financing and implementation of the project, each with their own share. In addition, a part of the funding comes from public sources, such as Business Finland or provincial EU funding. For this reason, the scientific and developmental aims are essential.

In the shared-cost study, the company is able to reach large entities and future-oriented projects with a small contribution. In the shared-cost projects, business groups are often involved and the projects have opened many doors for companies in the national and international partnerships and networks.

Our research groups continuously look for new business partners. If you would like to participate in research projects, contact the Xamk expert directly.
