Business in Biotechnology and Circular Economy (BBC1) project aims to improve interaction in the field of biotechnology and circular economy to reach future challenges and to find solutions to common problems in cross-border regions. BBC1 -project focuses on economic development and supports businesses to find new viable business opportunities and models to be utilized in the field of biotechnology and circular economy. The project is administered by Miksei Mikkeli and partnered by South Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk), ITMO University, Russia and the Association for Environmental Partnership (AsEP), Russia. The project is funded by the European Union, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Finland.
Facts
The main goal of the project is to improve cross-border cooperation in biotechnology and circular economy. The specific objectives of the project are:
1. To improve sustainable economic growth of cross-border region by supporting entrepreneurship and business cooperation in biotechnology and circular economy.
2. To improve cooperation between the companies in the field of biotechnology and circular economy (Russia-Finland).
3. To increase the level of knowledge of entrepreneurship and ability for new business establishment & commercialization of the scientific research results.
4. To improve the competences and competitiveness of Finnish and Russian companies in biotechnology and circular economy to succeed in the cross-border market.
MAIN ACTIVITIES / South Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk)
The creation of cross-border education concept in the field of biotechnology and circular economy by
-improving commercialization of the scientific research results.
-accelerating new business plans, spin offs and startups to be established.
-improving the competences of companies to operate in international markets.
-increasing cooperation between universities and companies.
-arranging an open competition amongst students and researchers to find new innovative ideas in biotechnology and circular economy -> supporting these ideas further with the accelerator programme to the finalists of the competition.

Higher education and research cooperation with Russia has been freezed since March 4th 2002, according to the recommendation by Ministry of Education and Culture. Ongoing RDI projects can continue without partners from Russia or Belarus.
