Agricultural industry in both Russia and in Finland imposes considerable environmental influence on the local environment. Such influence comes partly as a result of energy production and use in the manufacturing processes of farms. To mitigate the carbon foot-print of industrial production, the Finnish National Strategy for Bioeconomy was introduced and launched 2014, implying cross-sectoral activities for climate change mitigation and adaptation with the ultimate goal to make Finland carbon-neutral society by 2035. In agrisector the actions need to focus on both food production and efficient usage of agricultural resources. Investing in renewables and adopting biofuels can also lower farmland footprints. Creating necessary agricultural technologies and using them to adapt national agricultural systems to changing climate will require innovations in policy and institutions.
Project introduces and promotes the BioEconomy concept and approaches for agricultural industry in neighbouring border territories of Finland and Russia through the complex of capacity building actions and practical showcases for the local actors in agrisector. Innovative agricultural practices and technologies can influence climate change mitigation and adaptation. They need to focus on both food production and efficient usage of agricultural resources.
