South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) has developed together with Finnish (VTT, GTK, Metsäsairila Oy) and international partners a databank gathering information on waste minerals and other waste materials contained in landfills across Europe. SMART GROUND –databank includes information about secondary raw materials located in different landfills, such as municipal solid waste (MSW), extractive waste (mining industry) and industrial landfills. The databank can also act as a marketplace between reusable materials utilizers and landfill owners. Thus, landfills have a high potential to become raw materials reserves in the future. This follows circular economy principle where raw materials and energy are recycled and reused. This reduces both the production of and the need for finite, raw resources.
