Mikkeli plans on starting education for mass digitization professionals and experts as first in Finland

PROJECT AIM

The main purpose of this project is to produce a labor force requirement plan and a labor force education plan for the
needs of large scale mass digitisation and storage library functions in Mikkeli’s Memory Campus area.

project activities

  • competence survey
  • labour force requirement survey
  • education need evaluation
  • education plan for digitisers and specialists

project results

The outcomes will enable the launch of a new education program in digitisation. As the digitisation industry size in Finland is small, this project will develop the whole industry, companies and organisations in the area, and secure the development of digitisation expertise in Finland. This project creates the basis for Memory Campus operations.
In the project labor force requirements were investigated and the education need survey was carried out to The National Archives of Finland and The National Library of Finland.
Based on the results the curriculums were created both to the digitisers and to the specialists. Educations will be ready to be executed when there is a decision on the establishment of the mass digitization center of The National Archives of Finland and on possible placing in Mikkeli is obtained. The estimated starting time of educations would be in the fall of 2020. It has been designed to take 10-15 people to each education. The digitiser education is meant both for beginners and for those who have done already digitising work. The ones to be taken to the education are mainly unemployed or under an unemployment threat. The specialist education is a supplementary education to the professionals of the archives field who work already in the field.
