The new fisheries areas became operational in 2019. The aim of the Fishing Areas on Map project is to create a browser-based mapping tool, through which the user can use geolocation data on websites of different fishing areas. In addition, the project will produce a website based on the identified needs of fisheries areas. These websites allow fishing areas to share information on the use and management of waters.

The project is managed by the Finnish Association of Fisheries and is co-implemented by the University of Applied Sciences of South-Eastern Finland. The project is funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry from fisheries management fees.
