MIRA

Identification and risk assessment of harmful substances migrating from stormwater to groundwater in Mikkeli

In the project MIRA, South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences Xamk and the City of Mikkeli are examining the concentrations of pollutants in stormwater and their transport, transformation and degradation in the groundwater absorption area in a pilot area in Mikkeli

Developing stormwater management solutions

Stormwater management and risk assessment

The objective of the project MIRA is to determine the concentrations of pollutants in stormwater from the built environment in the pilot area and their transport, transformation and degradation in the groundwater absorption area in Mikkeli.

In addition, the aim is to investigate the discharge of pollutants from stormwater into groundwater. In particular, the focus is on assessing the risks posed by pollutants to groundwater quality and identifying risk management methods in important groundwater areas.

From the perspective of groundwater protection, it is necessary to investigate the potential risks that arise when stormwater from the built urban environment is absorbed into the groundwater through the soil.

Work packages

WP 4.1 Research on the transport and degradation of pollutants in stormwater from the built environment in the groundwater absorption area of the pilot target area in Mikkeli (Xamk & City of Mikkeli)

WP 4.2 Risk management and opportunities to protect and manage the pilot groundwater area from pollutants contained in stormwater from the built environment (Xamk & City of Mikkeli)

WP 4.3 Communication, implementation of results and reporting (Xamk and the City of Mikkeli)

Results

As a result, there will be a new operating model that can be used to manage the impacts of pollutants contained in stormwater from the built environment on the groundwater area. The operating model can be used to cost-effectively target stormwater management solutions in the future to those formation areas where they will be most beneficial. The management tools and applications can be replicated and expanded to other areas of the built environment in Finland.
