Adaptation training course for adults with cancer -research study

This study explores the role of adaptation training courses as part of cancer rehabilitation services. It examines how patients are referred to these courses, how the courses are implemented, the benefits experienced from different perspectives, and the needs for further development.

The research aims to promote consistent and high-quality cancer rehabilitation in Finland.

Research for Kela’s Information Needs

About one in three Finns will develop cancer during their lifetime, and the number of cases is expected to rise by 30% by 2035. High-quality cancer care means more than medical treatment – it includes physical, psychological, and social support, as well as guidance throughout all stages of cancer treatment and assistance in maintaining work ability and daily functioning. Adaptation training courses offer comprehensive support for people living with cancer and their families.

Starting in 2025, Kela introduced a new approach to adaptation training for adults with cancer. Instead of grouping participants by cancer type, courses are now organized by age groups that reflect different life stages.

The research will help improve the effectiveness of the courses.

The results of the Adaptation Training for Cancer Patients study will support the development of adaptation training courses for cancer patients and clarify their role within the rehabilitation field. Through implementation research, we aim to improve the effectiveness of these courses and ensure they meet the needs of clients at different stages of life.

The study is part of Kela’s coordinated research initiative, Muutos 4.
