The project BASCIL helped local food producers in rural areas diversify their business into sustainable culinary tourism services, and thus reach new customers.

Local food producers in South Savo and South Karelia

Why?

Small food producers in rural areas had experienced serious external disturbances because of the pandemic, rising energy prices and production costs etc. It had a strong impact on the resilience of the local food sector in rural areas. One of the solutions for small local food producers was the diversification of their business activity into the sustainable culinary tourism sector.

15 partners from 8 countries

BASCIL – Innovative Solutions Enhancing Sustainable Culinary Tourism Services Through Diversification in the Rural Food Production Sector was an international project involving 15 partners from 8 countries in the Baltic Sea region. From Finland, the partners were Xamk (South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences) and Lomalaidun ry, with South Savo and South Karelia as the pilot areas.

Project activities

The goal of the BASCIL project was to provide innovative and practical solutions for food producers operating in rural areas, specifically in the South Karelia and South Savo regions of Finland. These solutions would enable the expansion of their operations into the realm of food tourism. Project partners and stakeholders designed and piloted products and service packages that combined food production with food tourism (for example, farm visits, cooking classes, tasting events or pop-up cafes). To increase visibility and accessibility, the project aimed to identify new ways to market these developed products and services. The objective was to raise the profile of the Baltic Sea region as a food tourism destination and to showcase local food producers and the area.
