Promoting local biogas production
The aim of the project by LUT University and South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences Xamk was to promote and activate the local production and use of biogas on farms in South Savo. The collaborative project investigated the possibilities of local farms to utilize biogas, the available utilization technologies, and their competitiveness in different locations.
Local opportunities and obstacles were charted out with a survey targeted at farms, and the operating model for biogas utilization was discussed using an example from outside the region. The different uses of biogas were examined including, among others, heat, electricity, machinery, and transport. The project also examined the need and possibilities for biogas processing, as well as the side effects of use.
The usability and suitability of biogas was assessed in production sites of the farm size category in South Savo. The results will be used to find new opportunities for local utilization of biogas.

Results
The project results will promote and facilitate the introduction of competitive and environmentally friendly biogas and motivate operators to make new investments. Utilizing local resources will improve the vitality and security of supply of rural areas and farms, with the ultimate goal of a carbon-neutral farm.
