DIGIMARIS

Digital solutions for the harmonized and cost-effective Finnish-Estonian marine response service

Device and system testing to develop new unmanned and autonomous solutions for marine oil spill response, in cooperation with Finland and Estonia.

Once the system components have been tested, the project will invest in the actual spill response system and its implementation.

New technologies to support marine spill response

Core content of the project

New technological solutions offer opportunities to improve the efficiency of oil and chemical spill response operations. However, the actual benefits of these technologies must first be assessed. Therefore, the project will test the usability of unmanned surface and air vehicles, robotics, and various sensors for oil spill detection, monitoring, containment, and recovery.

Based on the tests, the DIGIMARIS project consortium will develop a new digital spill response system to be introduced in Finland and Estonia.

The main work phases are: 1) Testing the necessary sensors and digital devices and their platforms in an oil spill response testing facility and at sea; 2) Defining standards for the suitability of the devices for response work and their usability in open sea conditions; 3) Procuring the necessary equipment in both countries; 4) Integrating the data collected by the equipment into existing applications; and 5) Providing user manuals and targeted training.

Xamk is responsible for equipment and method testing using its own oil spill response research and testing environment.

The project will start on September 1, 2025.
