GloBio – Global bioeconomy solutions from local innovation networks
The GloBio project develops bioeconomy solutions that address global sustainability challenges by leveraging local research expertise and business networks. The project promotes the green transition, carbon‑neutral production, and circular economy by creating innovations based on renewable raw materials for applications in construction, packaging, and carbon capture.
From local innovations to global bioeconomy solutions
GloBio accelerates the development of bio-based innovations
The advancement of the bioeconomy and the green transition requires reducing the use of fossil‑based materials, particularly in the construction industry, packaging solutions, and energy production. At the same time, there is growing pressure from both legislation and markets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and promote circular economy practices.
Although the environmental benefits and technical potential of bio‑based materials, such as biocomposites and high-value cellulose grades are widely recognized, their industrial adoption remains limited. Barriers include production costs, challenges related to processing, and uncertainty regarding the long-term durability and performance of these solutions at industrial scale.
Sustainable material and process solutions
GloBio promotes the development of bioeconomy and circular economy solutions by combining regional research expertise with industrial collaboration. Key development areas include 3D-printable biocomposite molds, barrier solutions for fiber-based packaging materials, and technologies for capturing biogenic carbon dioxide from low-concentration gas environments. The aim is to lower the barriers to adopting new technologies, strengthen regional competence, and create conditions for scaling solutions to international markets.
Key actions of the project
The GloBio project’s activities are divided into the following work packages:
WP1. 3D‑printable molds and forming solutions
WP2. Bio-based packaging barrier layers and dispersion control
WP3. Biogenic CO₂ capture technologies
WP4. Pilots and demonstrations
WP5. Project management, communication, and dissemination
Results
The GloBio project generates concrete bioeconomy solutions that support circular economy, carbon-neutral production, and industrial renewal. The key outcomes include:
- 3D-printable biocomposite mold solutions, whose performance and durability will be piloted in practical casting applications. These solutions support material efficiency and mold reuse.
- Development and evaluation of barrier solutions for bio-based packaging materials, focusing on the protective properties, recyclability, and industrial processability of fiber-based packaging.
- Development and piloting of biogenic CO₂ capture solutions in low-concentration process and ventilated air environments.
- Pilots and demonstrations to assess the performance and scalability of the solutions for industrial use.
- Strengthened regional expertise and business collaboration, creating a foundation for new business opportunities and continued development beyond the project’s duration.
The project results are widely applicable across various industrial sectors. They support the development of the bioeconomy ecosystem in South Savo and contribute to the advancement of solutions toward national and international markets.
