Regenerative Wellbeing and Tourism Services as a New Pull Factor for South Savo
The tourism of the future leaves its mark only on the heart.
A regenerative approach to developing wellbeing and tourism services offers an opportunity to design value-based services whose experiential content rooted in sustainability thinking and creating meaningful insights sparks positive change in individuals, local communities, and the environment.

The vitality of nature and communities sustains the region’s viability
In South Savo, wellbeing and tourism services are being developed in ways that strengthen the region’s ecological carrying capacity and cultural heritage. A regenerative approach to activities such as hiking may include opportunities for participants to actively support nature, for example, by removing invasive species, hanging birdhouses, or sowing wildflower meadows.
A thriving region requires not only flourishing nature but also vibrant communities and local culture. The development work is driven by a desire to preserve the region’s natural sites and cultural heritage amid growing tourism, while also boosting local livelihoods. As a result, conscious service users can be offered meaningful ways to support both nature and local communities. (Image: Visit Finland)

20 wellbeing and tourism companies from South Savo are participating
In collaboration with wellbeing and tourism companies involved in the Ruoti project, we are raising awareness of regenerative services and their potential in both national and international markets. We are developing services aimed at creating new business opportunities by reaching local, domestic, and international customers.
The project also promotes networking and collaboration among wellbeing, tourism, and environmental actors, enabling regional stakeholders to share knowledge, experiences, and resources. Through the Ruoti project, we strive for a shared vision to preserve South Savo’s natural environments as tourism and the use of nature destinations increase. With proactive and regenerative actions, we are laying a sustainable foundation for continued service use in the future. (Photo: Julia Kivelä, Visit Finland)
The Finnish word ruoti refers to the supportive and connective part of plants to make them whole. In the same way, the Ruoti project serves as the backbone for emerging regenerative solutions. It brings together entrepreneurs and stakeholders to enhance the wellbeing of both nature and people.
Core activities of Ruoti
- Increasing Awareness: What Are Regenerative Services? An open-access webinar will explore what regenerative services are and the opportunities they offer in both national and international markets. A workbook tailored for businesses will be developed using expert knowledge to support the implementation of regenerative services.
- Business Development: How Are Regenerative Services Developed? Regenerative services will be integrated into companies’ broader business operations through company-specific collaboration and development work.
- Networking and Collaboration: How Do We Find Partners to Implement Regenerative Services? Cross-pollination of regenerative goals and business models will be facilitated through joint events among stakeholders in the South Savo region.
- Communication and Branding: How Are Regenerative Services Marketed? Marketing and branding of services developed within the project will be supported. Furthermore, a public expert event will be organized to raise awareness of regenerative well-being and services.
