Sustainability Reporting as a Tool

For Climate Change Adaptation

In this project, practical sustainability reporting tools will be developed for small and medium-sized enterprises in the logistics sector. These tools will help companies meet tightening stakeholder requirements, manage climate risks, and gain a competitive advantage.

Sustainability as a source of competitive advantage

Practical tools for sustainability reporting

The aim of this project is to accelerate the adoption and strategic application of sustainability reporting among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the logistics sector. By providing guidance and strategic support, the project helps companies to leverage sustainability reporting as a tool for business development and to secure a strong competitive advantage.

In this project, practical sustainability reporting tools will be developed to help SMEs in the logistics sector meet increasingly demanding requirements from legislation, customers, financiers, and partners. Beyond compliance, these solutions—such as sustainability checklists, self-assessment tools, and storytelling methods—enable companies to fully leverage reported data for strategic business development and long-term competitive advantage.

Co-creation processes and pilots implemented in this project will ensure that developed tools are tailored to the real needs of companies, while a collaborative network approach supports stakeholders and the entire logistics sector in transitioning to climate-resilient operating models.

Logistics companies must reduce emissions, but also adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The logistics sector is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, but this also presents many opportunities for the industry to contribute to climate change mitigation. Climate change is already impacting all kinds of businesses, and it will continue to do so with increasing intensity. Changing weather conditions and extreme weather events will inevitably have an increasing impact on the operating environment of logistics companies in the future. Therefore, companies must not only reduce their own emissions but also identify climate risks and develop strategies to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Main Actions of the Project

Mapping the current state of legislation: Compiling an information package on legislation and directives related to sustainability reporting, along with an outlook on the future developments. Assessing the impact of these regulations on logistics companies of different sizes, with a particular focus on SMEs.

Mapping and developing tools: Researching and compiling an information package on various sustainability reporting models and existing reporting tools and services for SMEs. Developing practical, tailored solutions to meet the needs of logistics SMEs, such as creating checklists for assessing the current state of sustainability and preparing self-audit materials that support SMEs in sustainability reporting and climate change adaptation.

Information sessions and knowledge sharing: Organizing information sessions on sustainability reporting for companies, and sharing insights on its importance and strategic use in strengthening competitiveness. Providing information on sustainability reporting regulations, reporting models, and tools, while gathering input from participating logistics SMEs on their challenges and needs related to sustainability reporting. Encouraging companies in the Kymenlaakso region to engage in sustainability and climate action by showcasing examples of companies that have gained a competitive advantage through sustainability.

Climate risk assessment and scenario workshops: Organizing workshops where companies learn to identify climate change-related risks relevant to their business. Using scenario analysis to develop adaptation strategies. Scenarios help make climate-related situations easier to understand, while increasing SMEs’ awareness of impacts and strengthening their commitment to climate action.

Piloting the tools: Testing the developed tools, such as the sustainability checklist, with the target group. Developing self-audit materials that help companies systematically assess and improve their sustainability practices and reporting. Evaluating the effectiveness of the tools through participant surveys and feedback discussions. The feedback collected will guide the final development of the tools and ensure that the tools are clear, practical, and supportive of business operations. Assessing the perceived benefits for companies and their willingness to continue development after the project.

Communication and distribution of results: Actively communicating about project events, sessions, and achieved results through various channels to increase visibility and engage stakeholders in network-based collaboration. Visualizing sustainability data and creating innovative adaptation stories as part of communication efforts. Introducing new perspectives and inspirational operating models, while showcasing examples of how companies not only respond to changes driven by sustainability requirements but also leverage them to build competitive advantage.
