Energy Engineering Research Unit
Responding to the energy transition requires significant investments in development work and new skills. The Energy Engineering Research Unit supports the regional needs of the energy transition through applied research.
Solutions to the challenges of the energy transition
Collaborating towards a sustainable energy system
The Energy Engineering Research Unit promotes a sustainable energy system by combining applied research, close cooperation with companies, and modern education.
We support regionally significant themes such as:
- Energy efficiency
- Renewable energy production
- Energy storage
- Development of the battery cluster
- Initiatives of the Hydrogen Valley of Finland Ry
Our research and development activities are strongly business-oriented and based on cooperation with numerous stakeholders. We are involved in both national and international networks, such as the Southeast Finland Battery Cluster, the Hydrogen Valley of Finland, and the eseia network (European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance).
We also work closely with the energy engineering education at the Kotka campus. Students actively participate in regional energy efficiency projects, and in developing skills, we build a continuum from vocational education to higher education.

Explore our unit’s research environments
A key part of the Energy Engineering Research Unit is the test platform, which includes two complementary development and research environments. These enable the piloting and development of energy sector innovations in a real operating environment.
The platform combines:
- Geothermal well
- Equipment for hydrogen production and storage
- Fuel cell
- Wind turbine
- Solar panels and tracker
- Heat pumps
- Electrical and thermal storage
- AI-based control and simulation
Thanks to intelligent control, the whole system operates as one – a perfect test platform for SMEs developing energy technology, control systems, control logic, or storage solutions. You can bring your idea or developing solution to us, and we will start testing and developing it together.

Hydrogen Systems Research Environment
Hydrogen Systems Research Environment
The Hydrogen Systems Research Environment provides a platform for solutions related to hydrogen production, storage, and utilization. The environment studies the role of hydrogen as part of a diverse energy system.

Geoenergy Research Environment
Geoenergy Research Environment
The Geoenergy Research Environment focuses on the utilization of geothermal energy in heating and cooling systems. The research environment enables the development of new measurement and control technologies, for example.
