Information Management and Archiving
The Digital Information Management and Archiving Research Group develops the usability and accessibility of digital materials. The group operates as part of Digitalia, a research centre established in 2015 by South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, the University of Helsinki, and the National Library of Finland.
Enabling information preservation
Digital solutions for information management
Our research group aims to ensure that digital and digitized information remains accessible and reliable for the long term. We develop solutions that improve the usability of information, support long-term data preservation, and promote the utilization of archive materials in research, business, and society.
We also strengthen expertise in digital information management and develop research environments for information management. Our expertise lies in information management, digitization, migration, automated content analysis, and the development of artificial intelligence solutions.
We form part of the Digital Economy focus area at Xamk. We continue the strong tradition of Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences as a developer of electronic archiving solutions and contribute to the City of Mikkeli’s strategic goal of being a city of archives.

Development projects in information management and archiving
Development projects in information management and archiving
We implement projects that develop information management methods and environments. Through these projects, we improve the usability and quality of digital content and develop methods and services that utilize artificial intelligence. Our partners include libraries, archives, museums, research and educational organizations, businesses, and non-profit organizations. Based in Mikkeli, we work nationally and internationally. Our projects are funded, among other sources, by EU structural funds and Interreg programs.

Smart solutions for information management
Smart solutions for information management
We are developing automated content analysis, text recognition, and visualisation as information management methods. We apply both machine learning and rule-based approaches. We further develop a wide range of materials: already digitised text documents, photographs, videos, and historical periodicals, emails, and social media data. You can explore the results of Digitalia’s development work on our demo website via the link below. We offer both service demonstrations and open-source code for, among other things, tools for processing materials, AI applications, and visualisations of historical materials
