You can apply to degree studies at Xamk after you have completed the required amount of Open path studies in an Open University of Applied Sciences in Finland.

The required credit amount is as follows:
  • 50 credits of bachelor level studies or
  • 15 credits of master level studies (path for the degree of 60 credits)
  • 30 credits of master level studies (path for the degree of 90 credits).

The application can be submitted even if the required credit amount is not yet recorded in the study register. The studies must be completed as follows:

  • May application: by 31 July, the study records are checked by 15 August
  • October application: by 31 December, the study records are checked by 15 January

If the required credit amount is not in the study register at the time of applying, the admission is conditional. If the requirement is not met by the time of the check-up, the admission is withdrawn.

When applying for a master’s degree programme, you must in addition meet the general eligibility requirement for the studies (suitable higher education degree and a minimum of 2 years’ of work experience after completing the degree).

Eligibility and admission criteria

The degree programme you apply to must generally be the same where you have studied as an Open student. The courses which give an eligibility for applying in this admission must be mostly the degree studies’ first year compulsory courses. The suitability of Open path studies completed outside Xamk is individually considered.

If you are selected for the degree studies through Joint Application or through the Application from open path to degree studies, you will continue your studies according to your personal study plan. All credits completed through Open path studies are transferred to the degree studies.

Two application periods a year: 1-15 May / 1-15 October

  • Your application is processed approximately within one month from the time the application closes. Admission results are published by 20 June / 15 November.
  • If you are admitted as a degree student, you must accept the study place and enroll as a student by a given deadline through Studyinfo service.
  • May admission round: the deadline for accepting the offered study place is 11 July 2024, by 3 pm Finnish time UTC +3.
  • Enrol as an attending or non-attending student when accepting the study place offer. If your admission is conditional, you can enrol only when the condition has been met.
  • Enrolment for non-attendance for the first year in degree studies is possible only on certain grounds.
  • If you are liable to pay tuition fees for the studies, you are automatically registered as an attending student after paying the tuition fee (and meeting the possible conditions). Please note that the Early Bird scholarship does not concern the October application period.
  • If you apply for the study right both through Joint Application and the Application on the basis of Open UAS studies, you can accept the offer of admission only from one of the applications. See further information on Studyinfo.
  • The admission is conditional until Xamk has checked the certificates used for applying and that the required credit amount has been completed by the given deadline. The study place can be withdrawn if you have given false information.
  • The right to study as a degree student starts from the beginning of the next academic semester (1 August or 1 January).

Attachments

Attach an up-to-date transcript of records of your open UAS studies to your application form. The certificate must be official and confirmed by the current higher education institution. If you have completed the open UAS studies at Xamk, you can download a transcript of records from Peppi by yourself for attachment.

If you apply to a Master’s degree programme, you also need to attach the following documents:

  • a copy of degree certificate giving eligiblity to apply to the degree programme in question
  • copies of work certificates (minimum 2 years / 24 months) from the field after graduation

Exemption from tuition fees

The higher education studies in English are free for EU/EEA and Swiss citizens and for those permanently residing in Finland. To be exempted from paying the tuition fee for the studies, you should attach the exempting document to your application form. Please note that this does not concern citizens of Finland as their citizenship will be verified from the population register. More information about tuition fees.

 

How students are selected

Admission criteria for the application based on Open UAS studies for degree programmes conducted in English at Xamk is as follows:

Degree Programme in Digital International Business

  • The Open studies must be completed in a business or hospitality management programme. Suitability of the studies for the target degree is checked in the application process.
  • Students are selected on the basis of a study progress (amount of credits and the average grade for completed Open studies) and/or an interview.

Degree Programme in Environmental Engineering

  • The Open studies must be completed in an engineering programme. Suitability of the studies for the target degree is checked in the application process.
  • Students are selected on the basis of a study progress (amount of credits and the average grade for completed Open studies) and/or an interview.
  • Also applicant’s English language skills might be tested.

Degree Programme in Information Technology

  • The Open studies must be completed in a technology programme. Suitability of the studies for the target degree is checked in the application process.
  • Students are selected on the basis of a study progress (amount of credits and the average grade for completed Open studies) and/or an interview.

Degree Programme in Nursing 

  • The Open studies must be completed in a nursing programme. Suitability of the studies for the target degree is checked in the application process. 
  • Students are selected on the basis of an interview and/or study progress (amount of credits and the average grade for completed Open studies). 
  • Those applying to study in Nursing Degree Programme must have a sufficient good health status and functional capacity to be capable of completing practical assignments and work placement periods as part of the studies. 
  • A restriction related to health or functional capacity does not prevent students from being admitted if the effects of the restriction can be reasonably eliminated, for example by making special arrangements. The purpose is not to impose unnecessary obstacles to access to education for applicants with disabilities, or applicants with physical or mental impairments. Restrictions apply only in situations where it is clear that the applicants cannot participate in the study programme because of their health or functional capacity. 

 

Master’s Degree Programmes

  • The completed Open studies must be suitable for the degree programme you apply to.
  • In addition, you must meet the general eligibility requirement for the degree programme (suitable higher education degree and a minimum of 2 years’ of work experience in the relevant field after the date of award of the higher education degree).
  • International Business Management: Students are selected on the basis of a study progress (the average grade for completed Open studies must be min. 3,0) and/or an interview.
  • Rehabilitation: Students are selected on the basis of a study progress and/or an interview.

Request for adjustment

According to the legislation in Finland, an applicant has a right to request for adjustment to the decision concerning student selection within 14 days of publishing the results of student admission.

If you believe that there has been a mistake in the student selection and the admission criteria have not been applied correctly, you must first contact admission services at the university of applied sciences where the student admission decision has been made. If the decision was made at Xamk, contact: admissions@xamk.fi.

If this does not clarify the matter, you can make a written request for adjustment to the decision regarding student admission.

A request for adjustment must specify the name and contact information of the person making the request, the decision that the request for adjustment concerns, the points of the decision that adjustment is sought for and the grounds for the request for adjustment. If necessary, supporting documents can be attached to the request.
