Apply for degree programmes with your Open UAS studies

You can apply to degree studies at Xamk after you have completed the required amount of Open path studies in an Open University of Applied Sciences in Finland. .

The required credit amount is as follows:
  • 50 credits of bachelor level studies or
  • 15 credits of master level studies (path for the degree of 60 credits)
  • 30 credits of master level studies (path for the degree of 90 credits).

The application can be submitted even if the required credit amount is not yet recorded in the study register. The studies must, however, be completed (exams done, tasks submitted) as follows:

  • May application: by 31 July, the study records are checked by 15 August
  • October application: by 31 December, the study records are checked by 15 January
  • January application: at least 25 credits (1st semester studies) must be completed and recorded by the end of the application period (31 January) and at least 50 credits completed by 31 May. The study records are checked by 15 June.

If the required credit amount is not in the study register at the time of applying, the admission is conditional. If the requirement is not met by the time of the check-up, the admission is withdrawn.

When applying for a master’s degree programme, you must in addition meet the general eligibility requirement for the studies (suitable higher education degree and a minimum of 2 years’ of work experience after completing the degree).

Eligibility and admission criteria

The degree programme you apply to must generally be the same where you have studied as an Open student. The suitability of Open path studies completed outside Xamk is individually considered.

Joint Application is also an option

Remember that you can also apply for degree studies through Joint Application. Timetables can be found on our Applying website.

If you are selected for the degree studies through Joint Application or through the Application from open path to degree studies, you will continue your studies according to your personal study plan. All credits completed through Open path studies are transferred to the degree studies.

Three application periods a year

There are two application periods for all degree programmes1-15 October and 1-15 May.

  • Your application is processed appr. within one month from the time the application closes. Admission results are published by 15 November / 15 June.
  • If you are admitted as a degree student, you must accept the study place and enroll as a student by a given deadline through Studyinfo.fi service. If you are liable to pay tuition fees for the studies, also the fee must be paid before you are registered as a student at Xamk. Deadlines in 2021-2022:
    • October application 2021: 3 December 2021, 3 pm Finnish time
    • May application 2022: 15 July 2022, 3 pm Finnish time (please note the separate deadlines for Early Bird scholarship).
  • If you apply for the study right both through Joint Application and the Application on the basis of Open UAS studies, you can accept the study place offer only from one of the applications.
  • The right to study as a degree student starts from the beginning of the next academic semester (1 August or 1 January).

The application on the basis of Open UAS studies is additionally open for Bachelor’s degree programmes in English during 25-31 January.

  • Admission results are published by 15 February.
  • If you are admitted as a degree student, you must accept the study place and enroll as a student by 15 July 2022, 3 pm Finnish time through Studyinfo.fi service. If you are liable to pay tuition fees for the studies, also the fee must be paid before you are registered as a student at Xamk. Please note the separate deadlines for Early Bird scholarship.
  • If you apply for the study right both through Joint Application and the Application on the basis of Open UAS studies, you can accept the study place offer only from one of the applications.
  • The right to study as a degree student starts from the beginning of the next academic semester (1 August).
  • The application timetable makes it possible for a student who has completed the Open UAS studies from outside Finland, to apply for a residence permit in time for continuing studies on campus the next semester. The application is however open also for applicants living in Finland.

Application form

The application form is submitted at Studyinfo.fi service, it is available only during the application period. The application form closes on the last application day at 3 pm Finnish time. Attachments

Attach an up-to-date transcript of records of your open UAS studies to your application form. The certificate must be official and confirmed by the current higher education institution. If you have completed the open UAS studies at Xamk, you can download a transcript of records from Peppi yourself for attachment.

If you apply to a Master’s degree programme, you also need to attach the following documents:

  • a copy of degree certificate giving eligiblity to apply to the degree programme in question
  • copies of work certificates (minimum 2 years / 24 months) from the field after graduation
Exemption from tuition fee

The higher education studies in English are free for EU/EEA and Swiss citizens and for those permanently residing in Finland. To be exempted from paying the tuition fee for the studies, you should attach the exempting document to your application form. Please note that this does not concern citizens of Finland as their citizenship will be verified from the population register.

How students are selected

Admission criteria for the application based on Open UAS studies for degree programmes conducted in English at Xamk is as follows:

Degree Programme in Environmental Engineering
Degree Programme in Information Technology

  • The Open studies must be completed in an engineering or technology programme. Suitability of the studies for the target degree is checked in the application process.
  • Students are selected on the basis of an entrance examination or an interview, and study progress (amount of credits and the average grade for completed Open studies).

Degree Programme in Digital International Business
Degree Programme in Wellbeing Management

  • The Open studies must be completed in a business or hospitality management programme. Suitability of the studies for the target degree is checked in the application process.
  • Students are selected on the basis of an interview and study progress (amount of credits and the average grade for completed Open studies).

Degree Programme in Game Design

  • The Open studies must be completed in a similar programme in the field of culture.
  • The average grade for completed studies must be min. 3,5. If the average grade is below the requirement, the student selection is based on a portfolio.

Master’s Degree Programmes

  • The completed Open studies must be suitable for the degree programme you apply to. In addition, you must meet the general eligibility requirement for the degree programme (suitable higher education degree and a minimum of 2 years’ of work experience in the relevant field after the date of award of the higher education degree).
  • Student selection is based on an interview (study abilities, commitment and orientation for the field are evaluated).
Admission is conditional

The admission is conditional until Xamk has checked the certificates used for applying (studies completed at another UAS than Xamk and the educational and work certificates related to master’s degree programmes) and that the required credit amount has been completed by the given deadline (end of semester/end of May).

The study place can be withdrawn if you have given false information. To make sure you don’t lose the study place, remember to accept it an enrol as student by the given deadline.

Enrolment as student

Enrol as an attending or non-attending student when accepting the study place offer. If your admission is conditional, you can enrol only when the condition has been met.

Enrolment for non-attendance for the first year in degree studies is possible only on certain grounds. Please see information on non-attendance from here. 

Tuition fee and enrolment

If you are liable to pay tuition fee for the studies, you are automatically registered as an attending student after paying the tuition fee (and meeting the possible conditions). Please note that the Early Bird scholarship does not concern the October application period. See details on tuition fees and the scholarship scheme here.

One study place provision

If you apply for a study place in more than one application (e.g. Joint Application and separate/direct applications), note that you can accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland that begins in the same academic term. Please see further information on Studyinfo.fi.

Request for adjustment

According to the legislation in Finland, an applicant has a right to request for adjustment to the decision concerning student selection within 14 days of publishing the results of student admission.

If you believe that there has been a mistake in the student selection and the admission criteria have not been applied correctly, you must first contact admission services at the university of applied sciences where the student admission decision has been made. If the decision was made at Xamk, contact: admissions@xamk.fi.

If this does not clarify the matter, you can make a written request for adjustment to the decision regarding student admission.

A request for adjustment must specify the name and contact information of the person making the request, the decision that the request for adjustment concerns, the points of the decision that adjustment is sought for and  the grounds for the request for adjustment. If necessary, supporting documents can be attached to the request.
