2,400 New Students Begin Their Journey at Xamk This August!
The academic year for new students at Xamk kicks off with an orientation week. During the first week, students are introduced to the university’s practices and digital systems, and they explore campus services and facilities through a campus orienteering activity led by tutors—second-year students who support newcomers.
“The Student Union Kaakko is responsible for training and guiding Xamk’s tutors. We currently have over 300 tutors supporting both Finnish- and English-language degree programmes. Tutors can choose the type of tutoring they wish to provide, and we offer five different specialization areas, from which a tutor may select up to two. The training covers general study-related topics and, depending on the specialization, includes group guidance and student wellbeing. The most important task of a tutor is to help new students adapt to university life. Tutors may also organize events that support group bonding and the start of studies,” explains Eetu Mansikka, Specialist in Tutoring and Guidance at Student Union Kaakko.
In addition to tutors, Xamk offers various forms of support to help students adjust to this new phase in life. This includes wellbeing services such as workshops, information sessions, peer support, and physical activity groups. International students arriving in Finland are also supported by integration coordinators, who assist with housing, cultural orientation, and organize events that help students network with each other and with local organizations, aiding their integration into Finnish society.
Returning students resume their studies on September 1st.
