Insights on sustainable development and the circular economy

– In Finland, I’ve seen how sustainability is deeply integrated into many areas of life — especially in creative projects. Compared to Mexico, where circular systems in the fashion industry are still developing, being here has opened my eyes to what is possible when strong national values are reflected in everyday actions. This experience motivates me, not only because it aligns with my personal and professional values as an engineer, but because it shows how much we can learn by exchanging ideas across cultures.
Learning new aspects at work
Gerardo’s studies in industrial engineering focus on process optimization, quality control, and systems thinking, but at Xamk he has been able to expand his knowledge in the field of user experience. The project where he is working is developing a digital environment for emerging designers and artists who want to develop their skills in green transition and sustainability and tackle the challenges of material waste. The project Time for (S)heroes also creates sustainability and circular design guidelines, a co-design model, and builds a collective mindscape to enhance sustainability. The co-design portal remains an open-access platform for interdisciplinary use.
– Now I’m working with user experience design, which is a new concept for me. I have to see things from the outside, from the user’s perspective, and not inside the processes that I’ve used to. It’s a unique opportunity that allows me to contribute my technical background and creativity while working on a project that promotes sustainability, inclusion in the fashion and design industry.
Determination and drive to make your mark, motivated to challenge yourself
One of the most transformative moments in Gerardo’s life happened while he was part of a peaceful student movement at his university in Mexico. He was part of the student committee, where he developed skills such as leadership, teamwork, and resilience while organizing and coordinating actions with others. He sees many personally important themes in Time for (S)heroes project, such as creativity, collaboration, and the power of building a safe and supportive community where people can grow and express themselves.
– That experience in Mexico gave me the courage to become the person I am today: someone who speaks up, who tries new things, and who is not afraid to grow. When I saw the opportunity to join Xamk and work on a creative, international project focused on sustainability, I didn’t hesitate. Here I feel the same spirit — a space where ideas are welcomed, and people are encouraged to be themselves. Being here reminds me of the power of the community, and that’s what truly motivated me to apply.
Thoughts on the Finnish work community
– At first, Finnish people might seem distant — with short answers and plenty of personal space (3 meters is enough). But after spending time here, I’ve come to see them as incredibly kind and warm. One of the moments that touched me the most was in the sauna. There, it doesn’t matter where you’re from or who you are. Everyone is equal. People open up, they talk, they listen — and somehow, in that quiet space, I felt like I truly connected with Finnish culture. And that’s something I’ll always carry with me.
