Innovations for Timber Construction from Radial Sawing – RadInno
The aim of the RadInno project is to research and develop, in collaboration with companies, methods and applications that enable the creation of a value chain in the region based on radial sawn products.
Utilizing large-diameter logs in the production of wood construction products in an innovative way.
Building a value chain for radial sawn products through business collaboration.
The aim of the “Innovations for Timber Construction from Radial Sawing” project is to harness the high potential of large-diameter logs (over 350 mm in diameter) in the production of wood construction products in an innovative way. Procurement, logistics, and production process concepts for logs are studied, modeled, and optimized to match radial sawing technology and its products using various conceptual methods in collaboration with partner companies.
The project adds value for forest owners, enhances the competitiveness of sawmills, and strengthens the position of the Finnish wood products industry in high-value export products.
Work packages of the project:
WP 1. Log procurement and logistics
WP 2. Optimization of radial sawing based on end products
WP 3. Development of radial sawing technology
WP 4. Manufacturing technology for radial-surfaced hybrid panels
WP 5. Export of radially sawn products
WP 6. Radially sawn products
WP 7. Prototypes and stress testing of radially sawn products
WP 8. Project coordination, reporting, and communication

Key actions of the project
Radial sawing is carried out in Finland on a very small scale, mainly using band saws. The objective is to develop commercially viable concept and pilot solutions for radially sawn products that serve companies in the wood products industry.
The project examines the radial sawing production process as a whole, from the procurement of oversized logs to radial sawing technology and the products suited to it. In addition, the export potential of radially sawn products and their further-processed derivatives is assessed, as these are primarily export products.
In the production of radially sawn timber, log procurement, logistics, and radial sawing technology play a key role. The project strengthens ways to increase the volume of high-value wood processing products through research and development activities.

Events
Samples of solid radial panels were exhibited in Japan at the international architecture and building materials trade fair in Tokyo on March 3–6, 2026 (Nikkei Messe). A representative from Xamk’s wood laboratory was present to communicate the laboratory’s activities and to showcase RadInno sample pieces, which attracted interest. The collaboration for participation in the fair was arranged through the South Savo Goes Global project.
