Information Management and Archiving
The Digital Information Management and Archiving Research Group develops the usability and accessibility of digital materials. The group operates as part of Digitalia, a research centre established in 2015 by South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, the University of Helsinki, and the National Library of Finland.
Supporting information preservation
Digital solutions for information management
Our research group aims to ensure that digital and digitized information remains accessible and reliable for the long term. We develop solutions that improve the usability of information, support long-term data preservation, and promote the utilization of archive materials in research, business, and society.
We also strengthen expertise in digital information management and develop research environments for information management. Our expertise lies in information management, digitization, migration, automated content analysis, and the development of artificial intelligence solutions.
We form part of the Digital Economy focus area at Xamk. We continue the strong tradition of Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences as a developer of electronic archiving solutions and contribute to the City of Mikkeli’s strategic goal of being a city of archives.

Information management solutions for your needs
Development projects in information management and archiving
Development projects in information management and archiving
Through our RDI projects we improve the usability and quality of digital content. We develop methods and services that utilize artificial intelligence. Our partners include libraries, archives, museums, research, education, businesses and non-profit organizations. Based in Mikkeli, we work nationally and internationally. Our projects are funded, among other sources, by EU structural funds and Interreg programs.
Smart solutions for information management
Smart solutions for information management
We develop automated content analysis, text recognition, and visualisation. We apply both machine learning and rule-based approaches. We further develop a wide range of materials from digitised text documents to born-digital data. You can explore the results of our development work on demo website via the link below. We offer both service demonstrations and open-source code tools e.g. for processing materials, AI applications, and visualisations of historical materials.
Information management specialist services
Information management specialist services
We offer evidence-based information and support for your organisation’s information management needs. Request a quote for dedicated R&D services, for example, the capture and migration of digital materials to an archive-ready format. We also provide software and AI solutions for information management, for example, for the automatic annotation of materials. We also advise on the use of the open-source tools applied. The precise implementation of the specialist service will be agreed based on your needs. Our subsidiary, Disec Oy, provides digital archiving and digitisation services.

The digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi service includes historical newspapers and periodicals published in Finland, as well as ephemera and other materials from the National Library in digital format. In addition to browsing and search functions, a download tool and pre-prepared open data packages are available.
Skills and competence development
Skills and competence development
We develop continuous learning solutions in the field of information management. We organise a free Digital Information Summer School annually. The Digitization Developer training is available via Xamk Pulse, and the Digitisation Skills Network, open to all interested parties, operates on the Skillhive platform (in Finnish). What our partners say about us
Collaboration that also develops the way we work
Collaboration that also develops the way we work
Our collaboration with Digitalia has been fruitful and diverse. We have worked together on developing service concepts, software development, experimenting with AI solutions, and conducting usability testing. Digitalia’s strength lies in its combination of research expertise, strong understanding of software development, and the opportunity to test solutions in a real user environment with students.
The most significant aspect of our collaboration has been Digitalia’s systematic approach to project management, which has inspired and shaped our own working methods. Digitalia is a partner that genuinely thinks together with the client – and helps to see the bigger picture.
Long-term collaboration in digitization and the development of digital materials
Long-term collaboration in digitization and the development of digital materials
Our collaboration with Digitalia has particularly focused on two key areas: digitization and the reception and management of electronic materials. We have participated in digitization training programs and projects aimed at improving quality, such as DALAI, and Memoriaali has also been a central component for us.
Digitalia’s technical expertise and development environments, such as the supercomputer Hippu, have been a significant asset to our projects. In long-term projects, lasting even several years, plans evolve and technology advances, and our collaboration has provided valuable lessons along the way. Digitalia is a knowledgeable and flexible partner, and we can warmly recommend them.
An agile developer supporting the modernization of digital archiving
An agile developer supporting the modernization of digital archiving
Digitalia has been a long-term strategic partner of Merkki and its predecessor, Päivälehti, in the development of digital archiving. The collaboration has focused particularly on converting email data into an archive-compatible format, as well as on the automated collection of metadata and the development of OCR text recognition.
The projects and pilots implemented with Digitalia have helped to monitor the technological development in the archiving sector and to implement new solutions in practice. For example, the conversion of email data has resulted in significant time savings and has improved the ways in which digital data can be managed more efficiently.
