Mikpolis RDI project activities
Mikpolis Research and Testing Laboratory carries out business-oriented research projects that promote the principles of sustainable development and material efficiency. In addition to its own RDI projects, Mikpolis also actively participates in RDI projects of other Xamk research units.
Our aim is to help businesses succeed and create new entrepreneurship
The research, development and innovation (RDI) activities of the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) aim to strengthen the vitality of South Savo and Kymenlaakso in particular.

The strengths of the Forest Bioeconomy, Materials and Environment research units are the research and development of new products, production processes and measurement and monitoring solutions for the bioeconomy, circular economy and technology industry.
Diverse RDI activities
Mikpolis has an ongoing project Research and testing of fire properties of modified and glued wood materials – MODIFIRE whose implementation period is 2025-27. It is exceptionally significant in scale and potential impact.
Completed projects related to materials engineering and the wood and construction industry:
- Clean wood surface
- Planewood – Utilization of Nordic Pinewood in the manufacture of wooden components for aircraft production
- New business for the thermal wood cluster with fire protection
- Pintamod – Resistant wood cladding with carbonization
- Kiertopuu – Recycled products from packaging and by-products of the wood products industry
- Nanotomo – use of nanotomography in materials research + investment in equipment
- From wood to well-being innovations
- Puupihi – Development of the wood surface carbonization process
- Long-term durability of fire protection + equipment investment.
