From Nursing Studies to Entrepreneurship – Chaturika Turned Hygiene Expertise into a High-Quality Cleaning Business
Alongside her studies, Chaturika worked part-time as a cleaner. The work felt natural to her: she has always been detail-oriented and meticulous. What she found especially rewarding was seeing the visible before-and-after results of her work.
“When I saw the results, I felt genuine pride. At the same time, I noticed that many cleaning companies focus only on basic cleaning and do not pay enough attention to quality and detail,” Chaturika explains.
As a nursing student, she also understood the importance of hygiene and infection prevention – a perspective that is not always emphasized in standard cleaning services. That realization sparked the idea for her own company.

Quality and Hygiene as a Competitive Advantage
Chaturika’s business idea is to provide high-quality, detail-oriented cleaning services for homes and businesses. Her goal is not just cleanliness, but strong hygiene standards and services tailored to each customer’s needs.
“I want to combine careful attention to detail with strong hygiene expertise. In the future, my aim is to grow the business into a broader facility service provider.”
Although the business is still in its early stages, the direction is clear: standing out through quality.
Balancing Studies and Business Requires Planning
Combining nursing studies with entrepreneurship is not always easy. According to Chaturika, everything starts with planning.
“I plan my week in advance and clearly separate study time and work time. I use a calendar and to-do lists to stay organized. Fortunately, my cleaning business is flexible, so I can schedule work around my lectures and exams.”
Time management has become one of the most important skills she has developed through entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship Is More Than Just Doing the Work
Her biggest lessons were not about cleaning itself, but about running a business.
“I’ve learned that running a business is not just about doing the job well. It’s also about communication, planning, and responsibility. Listening to customers and managing your time properly are essential.”
She has also been surprised by her own growth.
“I’ve been positively surprised by how supportive people have been about my work. I’ve also realized that I’m capable of taking on challenges I had never explored before.”
Nursing Studies Supporting Business Development
Her nursing education directly supports her business. Knowledge of hygiene, infection control, and safety is not just theoretical – it forms a concrete part of her service promise. This combination gives her company a clear competitive advantage and provides added value to customers.
Xamk Supporting Student Entrepreneurs
According to Chaturika, South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences actively supports student entrepreneurs.
“I was informed about courses, events, and support services. Lecturers encourage students to develop their own ideas. Xamk also offers funding opportunities for student ideas, which gives students a safe opportunity to experiment with starting a business.”
The Courage to Start During Studies
Chaturika’s story shows that entrepreneurship does not always begin with a groundbreaking innovation. Sometimes, it begins with the determination to do every day work better than others. The study years can offer a safe environment to experiment, learn, and grow – and sometimes to build something that lasts far beyond graduation.
