How Xamk Opened the Door to an International Career

Originally from Kouvola, Pihla chose Xamk for further studies because of the opportunity to study close to home and work. Xamk offered the perfect combination: location, flexible online learning, and an inspiring degree programme — Digital International Business (DIB).
Before starting at Xamk, Pihla had two vocational qualifications — business and practical nursing — and work experience from both fields. While she enjoyed the diverse customer service challenges in healthcare, she wanted new opportunities to apply her strengths more broadly.
– English has always been one of my strengths, so international business felt like a natural choice. I had a cautious dream of combining my healthcare background with business studies, or at least finding a field where I could use my strengths. The idea of university-level studies really took shape in 2019, when I lived in Ireland. That experience gave me the courage to apply, says Pihla.
– I wanted a career change and a higher degree. I realised my strengths were in administrative and communication tasks — and decided to follow that path.
Studying during the pandemic — and beyond
Pihla began her studies in 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Remote learning quickly became part of everyday life, which, although frustrating at first, proved valuable.
– It prepared me well for today’s working life, where remote work and self-direction are the norm. The digital learning methods at Xamk really surprised me — I was used to more traditional teaching. When I got my acceptance letter, I went to the nearest shop and negotiated a good price for a laptop!
Alongside full-time studies, she worked in shifts whenever her schedule allowed. Coordinating with her international study group required flexibility, but it worked out.
– Compared to my life as a full-time employee, studying gave me the freedom and peace I had been missing. A big thank you goes to my partner, who was my greatest support throughout my studies.
Internship in Ireland — gaining international experience and networks

The highlight of her studies was a three-month advanced internship in Ireland in summer 2022. Pihla shadowed a key account manager in a leading international organisation providing technology solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders.
– I found the internship through networks I built during my earlier time in Ireland. The work was independent and educational — and I got to enjoy a country that already felt like a second home.
During the internship, she also completed two online courses, including the thesis preparation course. The experience was supported by the Otsakorpi Foundation, Xamk, Kela — and her own savings.
Graduation and employment — straight to Xamk
Pihla graduated in spring 2024. After applying for a summer job at Xamk, she was thrilled to be offered a longer-term role.
– I still can’t quite believe how smoothly everything worked out. My current work is exactly what I wanted: independent, administrative tasks in an international environment. I especially enjoy communication work with customers. I’m already dreaming of starting a Master’s degree.
– I warmly recommend the DIB programme to anyone wanting to develop themselves in an international business environment and make the most of their strengths. Our group was diverse — from different cultures, nationalities, some with families, others straight from secondary school.
– The studies offered flexibility, opportunities for remote learning, and space for self-direction. I gained so much from the programme — and my internship abroad was a turning point that opened doors I couldn’t have imagined.
