Jouni Punkki Joins Xamk to Strengthen Concrete Research

For the past ten years, Punkki has served as Professor of Practice in concrete technology at Aalto University. Thanks to his university background, he has extensive experience in both research and teaching. Before joining Aalto University, he spent 18 years in development and management positions within the concrete industry. He also owns Betoniviidakko Oy, a consulting company specializing in concrete.

“Concrete is the most widely used and most important construction material, and therefore concrete research will continue to play an important role in the future. At the moment, low-carbon concrete and the use of recycled materials are particularly important research topics,” Punkki says.

“Xamk aims to become Finland’s leading centre for concrete testing and research, and I want to play an active role in achieving that goal. I already know many members of the Xamk team and am looking forward to working with them.”

In addition to its technical properties, Punkki is interested in the aesthetic qualities of concrete. He is also a part-time sculptor and creates sculptures not only from concrete but also from wood.

The Principal Researcher position is a new role within the Bio-Based and Circular Economy Research Unit and is a fixed-term appointment for two years. Punkki will be based at KymiLabs in Kotka and Kouvola, which has more than 30 years of experience in concrete testing. In recent years, research activities have been systematically developed alongside testing services, particularly in the fields of low-carbon concrete and the beneficial use of recycled materials. Significant investments have also been made in research equipment, and following the move to the new campus, the concrete laboratory now has modern facilities that effectively support its operations.

“‘Finland’s best concrete research laboratory’ has been set as a strategic objective, and Punkki’s appointment as Principal Researcher supports the achievement of this goal,” says Hanna-Kaisa Koponen, Director of Research Unit.

“We are proud to welcome him to our team and look forward to working with him. At the same time, we want to serve the industry and help ensure favourable operating conditions for the sector in Finland in the future.”
