Wooden side streams for building products

In Finland large quantities of wood-based byproducts and recycled wood that are ultimately used for fuel. In this project, we are piloting applications produced using low-threshold processing solutions, testing and measuring the technical performance of these solutions compared to products currently on the market, and also evaluating the processing costs.

Comparative tests are conducted on complete structures; for example, wall tests are performed to evaluate insulation performance, structural performance, and the ability to withstand vertical loads.

By-products are processed into insulation, molded parts, and structural components. Their functionality is tested, and companies are sought to manufacture and use these solutions.

Goals

The project demonstrates the use of wood by-products in wood construction. Pilot studies will verify the manufacturability of product blanks and the technical performance of the solutions. Comparisons will be made with solutions currently on the market, and manufacturing costs and competitiveness will be assessed.
The goal is to pilot product prototypes made from selected wood by-products and to study their properties as a basis for further development
.
The properties will be compared to solutions currently on the market with a specific application in mind.

Machining chips, lower-grade material, and scrap are the main production byproducts being studied; in addition, recycled wood and the crushed material made from it are the focus of the project.

When a tree is felled, it’s best to make the most of it. In wood construction, there is great potential to combine by-products with primary products—and everyone wins.

Key Actions of the Project

WP1 Characterization of side streams

WP 2 Flexible and insulating structural components for wall and roof structures

WP3 Dense and rigid structures

WP 5 Testing and comparisons

WP 6 Project coordination, reporting, and communication

Actual

SIPURA at Puupäivä

At the Xamk booth is a wall concept featuring a vertical frame made of recycled or off-cut wood, with insulation consisting of a screened and selected fraction of sawdust and sawing shavings. The interior surface is birch plywood and the exterior surface is softwood plywood.

The frame posts are made from scrap or recycled wood and can be efficiently manufactured using a continuous production line.

The structure will undergo further testing, including insulation performance and strength tests.
