Study tour: Exploring the Recipe for Finnish School Meal System – A True Success Story

Perhaps a key ingredient to Finland’s educational success lies in nutrition. The Finns believe healthy meals are fundamental to achieving challenging learning objectives and should be available to everyone. This 3-day study tour focuses on four aspects of school meals services: the concept of Finnish school meal system since 1948; recommendations for healthy food at schools; food education in Finland and cases of applying the Farm to Fork Strategy in the South-Savo region. The study tour gives you an opportunity to become familiar with the Finnish school meal system as well as the farmers and specialists of the field. In addition, you learn about the Finnish food culture and have an excellent opportunity to prepare lunch for yourself according to the healthy Finnish plate model.

The 3-hour RestoLab tour includes a host in the lab, a presentation of RestoLab, the lab’s philosophy, practical experiments and lunch together in Restaurant Talli. The tour is tailored to the needs of experts, teachers as well as professionals working on municipal administration and international projects.

During your tour, you will learn how RestoLab combines digital solutions in tourism and hospitality studies. You will become familiar with a hybrid model for teaching food preparation. You will learn how students can use digital solutions to develop their hospitality skills or even theory learning using. You will get the opportunity to test the hybrid model and WondaVR-world with VR-glasses.

Exporting expertise and know-how from South-Savo -project

These courses and educational visits are made within the Exporting expertise and know-how from South-Savo -project. The project is implemented in co-operation between three educational institutions in the region (Xamk, Esedu, and SAMIedu). The project is funded by South Savo Regional Council from the European Regional Development Fund for the period 2019-2022. One of the goals of the project is to develop export cooperation between educational, research and development organizations in the South Savo region.
