When you return to your studies after a period of non-attendance, please contact your Studies Coordinator to review your study plan. For other practical study-related matters, please contact the Student Affairs Office (Xinfo) on your campus

The academic year is from 1 August to 31 July. Every student must register as either present or absent each academic year according to the registration schedule.

Registering as present or absent

Register as present or absent in Xamk’s Peppi system via Welcome – Liferay (Peppi → Studies → Registration for the academic year).

Students who are currently registered as absent in Peppi must use a separate form: Registration form for absent students.

Important

Only students registered as present have the right to complete studies, receive credits recorded in the study register, and obtain study guidance. Students must register as present when completing studies that are part of their degree, including during student exchange, practical training, and thesis work.

Students who do not register as either present or absent lose their right to study. They may apply for the restoration of their study right. However, if the maximum study time has already expired, restoration of the study right is no longer possible.

During these registration periods, students can change their registration status by contacting the Student Services Office (Xinfo).

If a student wishes to change their registration status for the following spring semester, they must contact the Student Services Office (Xinfo) no later than December.

Students enrolled for non-attendance

• have no right to use Xamk credentials or systems that require Xamk credentials for login.
• have no right to pursue studies at Xamk or CampusOnline during the period of non-attendance.
• have no right to Kela financial aid or subsidised student meals.
• are not entitled to student benefits, e.g., travel discounts and use of the school’s internet facilities.

If a student has previously been registered as present and then registers as absent, their user account will be deactivated. After that, the student will not be able to sign in to any systems using Xamk credentials, and their mailbox will be closed. The mailbox will be emptied after a 30-day delay. When the student returns from the period of absence, the user account and mailbox will be reactivated.

The study place at Xamk is retained during a period of absence.

Students who are liable to pay tuition fees do not have to pay tuition fee for the semesters enrolled for non-attendance.

The scholarship scheme in effect at the time of admission remains valid throughout the study period, including when a student returns to their studies after a period of non-attendance.

Autumn semester: 1 August–31 December 2026
Spring semester: 1 January–31 July 2027
Summer courses: 2 May–31 August 2027

Study start dates

Teaching may be arranged for separately designated courses between 1 August and 1 September 2026.

New students begin their studies with an orientation week from 24–28 August 2026. Continuing students begin their studies on 31 August 2026.

Both new and continuing UAS students begin their studies on 11 January 2027.

No teaching is arranged during the following periods:

• 19–25 October 2026 (week 43)
• 21 December 2026–10 January 2027 (weeks 52, 53, and 1)
• 1–7 March 2027 (week 9)

In addition to news and official communications, Lux provides the guides, tools, and student support information you need during your studies.

Log in with your Xamk ID using the format username@edu.xamk.fi.

You will receive your Xamk ID when you begin your studies.

When you return to your studies after an absence, your username will become available in the authentication service after the semester changes (1 Aug or 1 Jan). To activate your account, you must authenticate and then set a new password. After setting the password, wait a moment, then sign in to Xamk’s systems and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). If you encounter any issues, please contact ICT support via Xinfo.

If you have forgotten your password, use the button below to change it using either your current password or Finnish online banking credentials.

Important

Always make sure you are on the correct website when changing your password. The correct website address begins with https:// and a lock icon is displayed in the browser address bar.

The purpose of assessment is to support the achievement of the competences set as the objectives of the degree programme. Assessment of learning at Xamk is based on the learning outcomes (knowledge-based competence, skills-based competence, teamwork skills, leadership skills, and readiness to take responsibility) of the European and National Qualifications Frameworks (EQF and NQF), as well as on the university’s generic and programme-specific learning outcomes.

The assessment criteria applied at South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences are based on the EQF and NQF frameworks. A completed course is graded on a scale from 1 to 5 or given the mark H (pass), and a failed course is given the mark 0 (zero). Grade 1 is the minimum passing grade.

Accredited and substituted studies are marked with H (pass) if a numerical grade is not applicable. All supervised practical training that aims to improve the student’s professional competence is assessed on a pass/fail scale, and the final thesis is assessed on a scale of 0–5. The maturity test included in the final thesis is assessed on a pass/fail scale.

3–4 = Good
1–2 = Satisfactory
0 = Failed
H = Passed

The student’s learning is also evaluated by assessing the learning outcomes of modules. This can take place as self-assessment by the student. Modules are not graded. Instead, the purpose of assessment is to view learning outcomes as larger entities than individual courses and to help students reflect on the progress of their learning from a broader perspective.
