Geoenergy Research Environment
Explore, test, and develop geoenergy-based solutions in a controlled and real-scale environment.
Geoenergy as part of a sustainable energy system
Research Environment Opportunities
The Geoenergy Research Environment is part of Xamk’s Energy Engineering Research Unit’s unique research platform, which supports companies in adopting sustainable energy solutions and product development.
The research platform of the Energy Engineering Research Unit combines:
- Geoenergy well
- Equipment for hydrogen production and storage
- Fuel cell
- Wind turbine
- Solar panels and tracker
- Heat pumps
- Electrical and thermal storage
- AI-based control and simulation
The Geoenergy Research Environment focuses specifically on the development and testing of geoenergy on a real scale. At the core of the testing environment is an 817-meter medium-deep energy well with two separate U-collectors at different depths. The environment offers a unique opportunity to experiment with the utilization of geoenergy, for example, in hybrid systems or exceptional situations.
The unique Geoenergy Research Environment offers:
- Real-time measurement data
- Rare field conditions
- Geoenergy testing as part of other energy systems
The Geoenergy Research Environment works seamlessly with Xamk’s Energy Engineering Research Unit’s hydrogen systems research environment and solar and wind energy. The whole enables the combination, comparison, and integration of different energy technologies.

Equipment and Functions
Medium-deep energy well (817 m), equipped with two separate U-collectors (800 m and 200 m), allowing the comparison and combined use of thermal properties at different depth levels. The well also functions as a thermal battery: waste heat is loaded into the well and discharged as needed.
40 kW ground source heat pump, which forms the core of the system’s heat production. Propane is used as the refrigerant, which is an environmentally friendly solution known for its low GWP value and excellent energy efficiency.
1000-liter energy storage, which balances the load and allows the storage and controlled use of thermal energy.
180 kW liquid cooler, which can test cooling solutions and hybrid use in different conditions.
Preheating of the ground circuit with a tube boiler, which allows the simulation of different initial conditions and the testing of exceptional situations.
Unique ground source heat transfer fluid, whose composition is optimized for both heat transfer capacity and system operation – allows comparison with traditional fluids.
Advanced automation and measurement system, which collects real-time data on, among other things, temperatures, flows, pressures, and energy production.
