WinterSOKO project aims to increase preparedness for oil spill incidents in ice-infested nearshore waters and on snow-covered shorelines.

Regional Fire and Rescue Services are responsible for nearshore oil spill response and oil recovery operations. In order to improve their cold weather oil spill response capability, four Rescue Services on the coast of Gulf of Finland i.e.  Kymenlaakso, Eastern-Uusimaa, City of Helsinki and Western Uusimaa Rescue Services initiated a joint project.

Objective of the project is to increase preparedness for oil spill incidents in ice-infested nearshore waters and on snow-covered shorelines. This project called WinterSOKO (TalviSÖKÖ A32372) is coordinated by Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences and funded by European Regional Development Fund ERDF.

OUTCOMES

Outcomes of the project are compiled into three reports and one poster presentation:
Literature review on oil spill response options applicable in cold conditions (In Finnish)
Background study on cold weather oil spill response options (In Finnish)
Cold weather oil spill response manual (In Finnish)
Poster presented in the International Oil Spill Conference (IOSC) 2014, Savannah, Georgia, USA
