Meduusa Studio

Virtual Production on the Kouvola Campus

Meduusa Studio provides a virtual studio located on the Kouvola campus, offering brand new technology and education for experimentation and learning.

Cutting-Edge LED Volume and Performance Capture Studio

What is virtual production?

Virtual production is revolutionising the film and audiovisual industries by combining game engines, motion-tracking cameras, and LED walls to create impressive and lifelike scenes. This technology allows for the creation and filming of realistic environments within a studio, saving time, costs, and benefiting the environment.

Virtual production technology not only enables a new kind of production model but also supports sustainable development by significantly reducing the need for travel and physical sets.

Virtual Productions

Virtual Productions

Combine real-time 3D graphics, LED wall, and advanced camera tracking to create immersive, photorealistic scenes directly in the studio. This approach eliminates the need for traditional green screens or on-location shoots, significantly reducing post-production time while giving full creative control in real time.

Motion Capture

Motion Capture

Motion capture accurately records an actor’s or performer’s movements in digital form so they can be transferred directly to 3D characters. This method enables natural and realistic animation for films, games, and virtual productions.

Holographic Projection

Holographic Projection

Holographic projection creates a three-dimensional, floating image that can be viewed from multiple angles without special glasses. It offers an impressive and futuristic way to present content at events, exhibitions, and performances.

Virtual Studio Technology

LED Volume

Main LED wall
Our flagship LED wall is 10 metres wide and 3.5 metres high, curved at 3 degrees for each cabinet row to enhance immersion. With a pixel pitch of 1.95 mm, it delivers sharp details that are ideal for real-time immersive environments during filming.

  • Brightness: 1500 nits
  • Refresh rate: 7680 Hz
  • Colour fidelity: HDR10, DCI-P3 99.9%
  • Contrast ratio: 12,000:1
  • Viewing angle: 160° horizontal / 140° vertical
  • LED type: IMD Mini 4-in-1

These features make it ideal for projection-based filming, significantly reducing visual artefacts like the moiré effect when shooting with cameras.

Secondary Wall
Need additional coverage or realistic reflections? Our movable 10m2 LED wall can be configured for different purposes as one or multiple volumes. This wall is perfect for fill light, interactive lighting, or background extensions.

Cameras

We have both Vive Mars and Optitrack system available for camera tracking to be used in combination with our LED volume. Meduusa Studio is equipped with two professional cameras:

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K
A high-end professional cinema camera with a 12K Super 35 sensor. Its 80-megapixel sensor captures ultra-detailed footage, allowing for cropping and reframing in post-production without loss of quality.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro
A compact yet powerful camera designed for film production. It features a Super 35-sized 6K HDR sensor that delivers cinematic image quality with a wide dynamic range and natural colour reproduction.

Motion Capture (MoCap)

Meduusa Studio offers two motion capture systems:

OptiTrack X22
A high-end system widely used in film and game production. It uses precise infrared cameras and reflective markers attached to actors or objects. The cameras track the markers in real time and convert the movement into digital data. This system captures even the subtlest motion details and is ideal for complex scenes involving multiple performers.

Rokoko
A lightweight, portable motion capture system that works without external cameras. It uses a suit with built-in sensors worn by the performer. Setup is quick, and movement is unrestricted, making it ideal for smaller productions, remote use, or agile capture scenarios.

Lighting Equipment

Meduusa Studio’s lighting setup is built around:

  • Aputure Amaran 300C lights with RGBWW colour control
  • Aputure Nova P300C soft light LED panels, also with RGBWW control
  • Aputure Infinibar PB12 effect lights

Lighting can be controlled using the Unreal Engine game engine. Light control data is transmitted via Ethernet and converted into DMX signals that the lights can interpret. This integration opens up entirely new creative possibilities for designing lighting in virtual production environments.
