A new pilot course for how to design and make music for games: Registration now open: You have time to register until 5.12.2025.

Are you a game designer, wanting to learn secrets to powerful sound design and music in games? Or are You a music maker, interested to find out how to apply your skills in the vast realms of games? This course offers real life stories, experiences and tips from successful professionals, as well as basic skills needed to design and write music for games along to free access to all materials in Open Learn.

This pilot program is brought to you by the national KLUSTERI -project, which aims to boost the music industry in Finland, as well as furthering networking and skills to operate across the digital content industries, especially with the gaming industry. Requirements for the participant:

There are no specific skill requirements, your interest on the topic is enough and hopefully a background for either video games, music or both!

Participating on this online pilot course is free to participants. But as a ESF co-funded action, requires registration through the ESF:s EURA 2021 information system before official acceptance to the course. You will get instructions to after registering via e-mail. After successful registration to the course and EURA 2021 system, we will grant you access to the pilot course materials with provided links for the remote sessions.

About the Video Game Music Pilot Course

The pilot course consists of three 2h remote sessions online.

First session:

Tue 9 Dec from 9:15-11:30 a.m. registration confirmations, overall introduction to course and keynote from Ville Sorsa and other interesting video game music related content from Jaakko Mela and Samuel Helineva.

Other information regarding the Pilot Course:

The remaining online sessions are scheduled to be on january and all registered participants will receive more information at a later date this year during the pilot course.

Each session consists of 45-60 minute key note and discussion and 45-60 min basic lesson on theoretical approaches, practical and technical tips and exercises based on new material in the Open Learn -platform.
  
The course is hosted by Samuel Helineva and co-hosted by Jaakko Mela – with Open Learn materials prepared by Game Design student Samuel Helineva.

Meet the Video Game Music Experts:

Ville Sorsa


Ville Sorsa is the Lead Sound Designer at Remedy Entertainment. In addition to sound design, his role includes operational tasks related to music as well as business development. Before entering the gaming industry, Sorsa also built a career in film and music. The games he has worked on, such as Control (2019) and Alan Wake 2 (2023), have won multiple international awards, with the latter receiving the prestigious BAFTA

Games Awards: Audio Achievement.

Salla Hakkola


Harpist Salla Hakkola is an internationally recognized game music composer and producer, whose works reach millions of players worldwide. She has created music for top titles such as Angry Birds, Clash of Clans, and Merge Mansion, earning multiple industry awards for her work. Hakkola combines strong musical expertise with a deep understanding of the gaming industry, crafting compositions that enhance game atmosphere and player experience. She brings extensive experience from projects with Rovio and Supercell, and runs her own studio, Tonally, which produces innovative game music.

Jaakko Mela


Jaakko Mela is an audio programmer, sound designer and a composer at Normogames. Oy, responsible for the design, integration, and optimization of game audio systems. He brings a structured and technical approach to sound development, ensuring consistency, performance, and creative quality across projects. Before entering the game industry, Mela earned a vocational qualification in music, specializing in electric bass, and studied trombone for ten years at a local music institute during his youth.

“I am a ‘multimedia artist,’ a gamification enthusiast, and I am deeply interested in game design, AV technology, and culture, as well as their intersections. I am quiet, attentive, and compassionate. I enjoy finding solutions to all kinds of problems.

I work in Kymenlaakso, in Kouvola, at the Kasarminmäki campus in Meduusa Studio. My primary role is as a gamification and digitalization expert in the Creative Industries Research Unit, participating in various projects. I am also enthusiastic about using imagination and often apply the method of ‘Lateral Thinking.’ I am passionate about developing AV and media solutions, digital gadgets, and shaping the present and future of the Future Experience Lab.”
