Project aims to establish an oil spill response research, testing and training facility in order to provide testing of full-scale equipment.

The test basin is implemented in collaboration with academia, governmental and regional oil spill response authorities, agencies, and public and private companies.

Objectives

The project aims to convert a decommissioned sewage aeration basin into spill response test tank. Large, concrete test tank allows testing of oil spill containment and recovery equipment and techniques, as well as conducting training with actual oil and full-scale spill response technologies.

Activities

The aim is to conduct oil spill response tank tests and demonstrations with participating companies, and to pilot both testing service and training service to be offered after the project phase. The project also studies the reuse and recycling options for oily wastes. Environmental aspects are taken into account thorough the project implementation

Outcomes

The oil spill response research, testing and training facility serves as a research facility to examine the behaviour and the alteration of physical characteristics of the treated oils. Test basin allows to develop new technologies and techniques in order to achieve better preparedness for oil spill incidents.

The oil spill response research, testing and training facility will be an integrated part of Xamk’s RDI-activities and its use will continue as internal and external testing service as well as research infrastructure.
