Why to study Bioproduct Technology at Xamk?

Structure of studies

The focus of Xamk’s bioproduct technology engineering education is process technology, especially the utilization of wood raw material for versatile products. This all happens as part of a circular economy, where natural resources are used sustainably and efficiently over and over again. Process technology is used to transform natural resources into products that serve our everyday needs, such as magazines, textiles, medicines and biofuels.

In this training, you will learn how to create valuable products from raw materials while minimizing the environmental impact. You will also learn digital skills, how to plan processes and use automation in production.

Core subjects in process technology studies are:

  • flow technology and heat transfer, material separation and purification processes
  • forest bio-rawmaterials and refining processes
  • process automation
  • test and analysis of materials and products
  • process design and designing software
  • environmental protection and circular economy

Excellent employment prospects

The employment prospects for qualified bioproduct technology engineers are excellent because the number of students in the degree programme is limited and the bioproduct industry is developing fast. You can find employment in the forest industry and the cluster around it e.g. in companies that design and produce process machinery and equipment. There are also good employment opportunities in the chemical processing industries such as oil refining, metallurgical ore enrichment and processing of minerals. Interesting jobs can also be found in the new circular economies that promote the recovery of carbon dioxide and replacement of fossil raw materials.

Process technology studies entail participation in many projects and practical assignments in companies. The amount of practical training has been increased in the degree programme to make the leap into the world of work after graduation easier and help employers to find engineers that are immediately prepared also for demanding job descriptions.

Full-time studies at Savonlinna!

Full-time studies take place mostly from Monday to Friday. The curriculum is designed for 4 years. The study time can be shortened to a minimum of 3 years by completing the practical training periods during the summer months and appropriately scheduling one’s work-related project assignment and thesis writing process. If preferred, separate courses can be taken from programmes that started in the previous year. It is also possible to utilise one’s knowledge and skills acquired in the world of work.

Implementation of studies

Studies in the degree programme in Bioproduct Technology are organised on Xamk’s Savonlinna campus and in the Fibre Laboratory as well as in the leading companies in the field. The Fibre Laboratory is a Xamk research unit which focuses on the research, development and innovation of industrial processes in cooperation with companies in the fields of pulp and paper technology, water treatment processes and refining of biomaterials.

Savonlinna is a city of strong business activities related to forest industry, and the Xamk Fibre Laboratory works in close cooperation with the leading companies in the field supporting their research, development and innovation projects. The Fibre Laboratory and the new FIBRE3 building serve as an efficient and experimental learning environment, and as a student you have excellent opportunities to do project work and find a thesis topic within the scope of Fibre Laboratory bioproduct technology research programmes.

Career oppoturnities

The employment prospects for qualified bioproduct technology engineers are excellent because the number of students in the degree programme is limited and the bioproduct industry is developing fast. Bioproduct and process technologies are widely utilised in various industrial functions. For example, the refining of raw materials, materials production, energy production and manufacturing of goods are all based on process technologies.

After completing the degree, you can work in design, development, operation, or sales positions. Tasks in maintenance or training are also possible. The employer companies can be large forest industry companies, chemical industry companies, design offices, companies that supply equipment and entire factory departments, such as ANDRITZ or manufacturing forest industry, such as UPM Plywood right near the campus. Small companies specializing in certain products also offer plenty of employment opportunities.

Bioproduct technology engineers can work, e.g.:

  • in design, product development, manufacturing and research tasks
  • in sales and marketing tasks
  • as technical experts
  • in maintenance tasks
  • in project management positions
  • in production supervisor positions

The education also provides the skills to work in educational tasks both in companies and in technical educational institutions and other educational organizations.

Task titles can be:

FAQ – the most frequently asked questions

Finland has two types of higher education institutions: universities and universities of applied sciences (UAS).

Universities focus on scientific research and education based on it. Universities of applied sciences, on the other hand, offer a pragmatic education that responds to working life needs.

Studies at a university of applied sciences (UAS) focus on professional and practical know-how and skills. The practical experience provided by UAS studies is highly appreciated in many jobs and duties. UAS Bachelor’s level studies also gives you the opportunity to apply for further studies, such as completing a UAS master’s level degree and continuing as far as a doctoral degree. Our bachelor’s degrees always include supervised practical training that gives you the opportunity to apply the knowledge learnt in theory into practice. You will become familiar with the duties of your own field in real working environments.

We have over 11 500 students, and we offer 9 Bachelor’s degree programmes in English, 2 Master’s degree programmes in English, open UAS courses, global talent acquisition programmes and summer school courses.

You can also apply for exchange or double degree studies at Xamk.

Are you interested in practical learning? Would you like to study in modern facilities with top-class teachers? Are you attracted to new ways of teaching and learning? If you said yes, Xamk might be just the place for you.
