From Sustainable Textiles to Bioproduct Engineering
Yasmin’s interest in sustainable and eco-friendly textiles led her to bioproduct technology. The idea of creating new materials from natural resources immediately fascinated her. The programme combines her passion for fibres and materials with engineering, allowing her to apply her interests on a much broader, industrial scale.

Practical and meaningful studies
What surprised Yasmin Saban most about studying at a university of applied sciences was how practical and relevant everything feels.
– Everything we learn has a clear purpose. There’s no need to memorise things that won’t be useful later in working life, she says.
She studies full-time on Savonlinna campus, which allows for close interaction with teachers and face-to-face guidance. While on-campus studies are less flexible than some other formats, she has found the teachers supportive and understanding – especially when challenges arise, such as overlapping exams and international travel.
Laboratory work is her favourite part of the studies. Hands-on lab sessions help connect theory to practice and offer a realistic picture of future working life. Although she has only just started, Yasmin is already applying for internships and looking forward to gaining practical training.
Learning in an international community
Another highlight of Yasmin’s studies is the international study environment. Coming from a background with limited travel experience, meeting people from different cultures has been inspiring and fun.
– Sharing cultures, traditions and everyday experiences with other students is something truly special, she says.
She chose Finland for its safety, high-quality education system, and supportive learning environment. Smaller class sizes and approachable teachers made Xamk feel like the right choice. Savonlinna, with its lakes, forests and rich history, quickly became home.
– The campus environment really stands out – teachers, student services, study spaces and student life all work together to make studying accessible and enjoyable.
Balancing studies and everyday life
Moving abroad straight after secondary school felt intimidating at first, but Yasmin was pleasantly surprised by how manageable the transition was. Living independently required planning, but support from Xamk staff and fellow students made everything easier.
Distance has even strengthened her relationships back home.
– Now we cook together over video calls, study at the same time and share everyday moments. Somehow, the distance brought us closer.
Coming from a busy capital city Bucharest, Yasmin appreciates the calm pace of life in Savonlinna, where nature is always close by. Student events have also played an important role in helping her feel part of the community.
Looking towards the future
Bioproduct Technology opens doors to careers where sustainability, chemistry and engineering meet. Possible roles include process or production engineering, product development, sustainability positions and applied research.
Yasmin’s dream is to help replace fossil-based fibres with bio-based alternatives and reduce textile waste.
– I want my work to have a real environmental impact.
With growing demand for sustainable solutions, she sees strong future potential in the field.
Advice for future students
Yasmin warmly recommends the programme to anyone interested in sustainability and future-oriented careers.
– Don’t be scared by the word engineering. This programme is about creativity, problem-solving and making a real difference.
Her advice to future applicants is simple:
– Choose your studies with your heart and think about who you want to become. Even if you have doubts, everything is possible with motivation, support and hard work. Dream big – and work even harder!
